I always go back to Varian yelling about having 200 ships at his command when he couldnt find the one with his son on it at the beginning of MoP.
If Blizzard wants to show a massive naval battle of hundreds of ships in the next patch then guess what? There will be hundreds of ships. The importance that they put on lore consistency or content is far less than the player base does.
