Did any of you have to ask Mom or Dad to pay for WoW?

Back then asking my parents to pay a sub for me was like asking them remove fingers.

My friend got his mom to just pay for his sub and she didn’t even ask questions.

Mine was terrified to put her credit card info on the internet. Such a different world. WoW wasn’t my first fight tho with the credit card…

I remember I got my dad to help me install FFXI on the PS2 we spent hours listening to that banger login music loop for PlayOnline and it wanted his credit card info. He had no clue this was a requirement I acted surprised but it didn’t work for me. Eventually I took it without permission lmao it paid my sub for like 5 months and he didn’t know but when he found out omg it was awful… He pawned my PS2 lol to pay himself back to teach me a lesson. So traumatic and sad.

It took months for my mom to let me download the WoW trial on the family HP desktop. omg it was awful integrated graphics and my step dad played this FPS shooter game demo that came preinstalled on loop every night. I could NEVER play.

She finally got me a debit card through wachovia bank and I subbed to WoW I was truly a cool kid at that point. So many of my peasant friends were still playing Runescape and Maplestory lol. I was like yeah. Got WoW at home…

Then it was like 1 year of hell fighting with my drunk stepdad to play WoW and finally they got me my own computer.

It was a tough life. I survived. But its fun to think about. I know im not the only one. Share your story.

I miss you Dad.

I was 32 when I started playing, and my wife knew it was my only hobby (gaming). I didn’t do recreational substances, or go to the bar. I did not fish, own a boat, or collect cars or tools. So $15 a month was an easy drop. I think the last thing my parents bought me was a new Camaro in 1995. I’ve been on my own since I was 18, so it was a treat for sure. But I’ve always had my own money, and made both kids earn their own sub fees as well. I would split the cost of the expac with them, but I wanted them to know where $15 of their $20 allowance went every month.

Parents thought gaming was a waste of money. Pitch for WoW never worked but I don’t mind, they’re probably right.

Bought my own sub once I started working.

damn they get 20 whole dollars every month? They could get a happy meal but you make them pay a sub fee so they’re kinda short some so they can’t. I guess they could get a snickers.

My mom has always paid for my WOW sub She only ever did because she wanted me to play with her.

I paid for my own WOW sub a few months back and for a few other expansions. My mom now pays for me just because she wants me to help her out, and she misses me.

No permission needed.

I was already an adult, at least on paper, still working on the actual adulting bit.

Adulting leads to too much sadness. I prefer avoiding all of that.

i had to beg my dad to drive me out to gamestop on his day off whenever i needed to pay for wow because he would ONLY let me get physical pre-paid bnet cards. the brightside is this was during wod so i wasnt really missing much on the times i couldnt convince the old man to get me a card

They were given a choice in a teachable moment. My son was 14 at the time, and my daughter was 10. We played together as a family (my wife played a resto druid once I got her into the game), so we could let them have fun, but keep them safe. The idea was to give them a choice, and teach them the value of money. They never got grounded, and always got A’s in school, cause they knew punishment was 1 week without WoW, and they paid for it out of their own pockets.

how old were you

27

you were 27 at the time of your story? Did you have a disability or something that I missed? I had been working for money for 10 years by the time I was 27.

I lived with them as long as I could. It’s a tough world out there.

I was 20 back in 2004.

I hit 30 that year.

Not tough enough, heh heh heh. Salud. I was of an age when EverQuest was big and no parent in Texas would have tolerated what that game took. Also, dial-up. I don’t know how anyone would take competitive realtime online gaming seriously back then on such lagginess.

Don’t they say that the better WoW players are poorer? RWF types had to give up the usual traditional 9-to-5’s, we know.

Word on the street is that there’s been a RuneScape exodus OF this game, NOW. Oh, the delicious irony.
