What happens to all our knowledge points in professions if we switch?
I currently have Skinning/Herbalism, I would like to drop skinning temporarily for engineering as I just looted Schematic: Khaz’gorite Fisherfriend and would love to make it for this character. Do I lose everything I have learnt (all my knowledge?) in skinning if I pick up Engineering? I’ve not really had a crafting profession since WOD, I prefer just gathering.
Would it be better for me to send the schematic to one of my alts, they take up engineering and we do a crafting order?
Thanks
It stays frozen in place on the profession where you assigned them. If you switch away you will start at zero KP in the new profession. But, if you later switch back they will still be there where you put them.
Personally I can’t imagine ever switching professions, but I have enough alts to have everything covered. I can indeed just mail a recipe to the right alt and have them work order me what I need.
If I was in your situation I would be hesitant to start Engineering just for the rod, good though it is. It is a pretty expensive profession to get up and running, and making the decision of whether it would be worth it kind of requires knowing the Rod market on your server. You may be able to sell the recipe for a decent amount, and just WO the rod from whoever buys it?

Once you switch back to skinning, its specialization stays as it was when you dropped it. So you dont lose anything, exxept you skinning skill back to 1.
it will take a lot of eng knowledge points to make a high level tool. once you switch to eng you dont have any knowledge. So it will be a while to level eng knowledge up, unless you are ok will 2 star tool.

Thanks for the replies, I understand it will be on the expensive side, I’m a “mat” collector so mats will not be an issue, I think I will just level up Engineering on an alt, who already has mining, I’m in no rush to get the rod, but I would like it eventually. Appreciate the insights.
