Hey all, I have some comments and questions about the Devourer Demon Hunter lore and wanted to bring it to the forums to gain some insights or see if their are any flaws in my thinking or logic.
The reason I want to bring this up is because it effects race choice. Im not a roleplayer but I do create backstories with my characters and want them to make sense.
The main question I have is, does a Devourer Demon Hunter still have fel inside or is it pure void. These are the scenarios:
-
A blood elf or Night elf classic Demon hunter consumes a Demon and gains fel power. To become a devourer, they replace this fel energy with void energy.
-
same as above, but they dont replace the fel energy, instead they add to it with void, so they have both.
-
a new generation of Demon hunters, including void elves, become devourer demon hunters by first consuming a Demon soul, gaining fel, and then convert it to void.
-
same as above, but there is no need to consume a Demon soul, they instead consume void essence and skip the fel part, going strait to devourer demon hunter with no fel.
I believe that 1) and 4) are true. The following quotes from Blizzard sources support my reasoning:
“Devourer Demon Hunter, a third specialization that utilizes the power of the Void instead of Fel, like other Demon Hunters.”
“The Devourer path represents Demon Hunters who turned away from Illidan’s Fel fire and instead embraced the Void. Lore-wise, these hunters aren’t driven just by vengeance, they are soul reapers, channeling the essence of fallen foes into destructive cosmic power.”
“Unlike Havoc (Fel chaos) or Vengeance (demonic resilience), Devourers harvest and consume souls to fuel their abilities.”
“Void-Scarred is all about embracing your inner Demon Hunter”
These quotes make it seem like Devourers can no longer access Fel energy and are infused with Void, they dont just channel it.
Why this matters:
If you create a Blood Elf Demon Hunter, this creates a problem with going anywhere near the Sunwell - a place you would want to protect. If you are infused with void then you cannot do this without putting your people in danger. However, if you are infused with fel and merely channel the void then this should be okay. You should be able to be around the sunwell the same way a warlock or shadow priest can. Therefore if devourer are infused with void, then making a Blood Elf Devourer seems problematic and counter-productive. Belf Demon Hunters, lore-wise, should probably only be Fel, otherwise thet would endanger those they want to protect.
If you create a Void Elf Demon Hunter and you can skip the Demon consumption process, then they would most likely do it. They are scholars who are interested in Void. It makes little sense for them to willingly take on Fel as well. Therefore Void Elf Demon Hunters, lore-wise, should probably only be Void.
A Night Elf Demon Hunter doesnt have these restrictions and either seem plausible. So making your Demon Hunter a Night Elf seems the only plausible way to choose either spec and have it make sense. This is important to me because I will probably want to play each spec, and I’m not sure which will be my preferred choice. It seems the only race where I can play Demon Hunter without any lore problems bothering me.
Sorry for the long post. Its really me trying to organize my thoughts and putting it out there in case others are trying to figure this out as well. I also want to check and see if my thinking is correct before I commit to Night Elf. Any feedback is much appreciated.
