Hello! I’m excited to make a return to retail and to RP in Shadowlands. I’m working on developing a backstory for a Demon Hunter and am struggling with the timeline of events a bit. Having never played or created a DH, I’m not sure whether the starting zone with clarify any of my questions.
If my character experiences great loss during the Third War and embarks to find Illidan, that search could conceivably last until the events of TBC when the first large batch of DH’s are created. Especially if he has already been empowered by the Skull of Gul’dan and is in Outlands.
Supposing my character joins and completes the ritual during this first batch, what are Demon Hunters doing through all that time before Legion?
In addition to this, with the new level squish, were there positions within the Demon Hunter forces for those still training which might explain why my character is only now learning the true extent of his power during the BFA story?
Thanks so much!
The timeline of demon hunters is pretty simple.
The general bulk of Demon Hunters were all “made” during the TBC era, and most of them were either killed or captured by the Wardens, the Wardens kept all the captured Demon Hunters in the Vault of the Wardens for 10 years (doesn’t sound as cool as TEN THOUSAND YEARS), Maiev and the Wardens freed all the demon hunters during the Legion Invasion, where most of them at that point got together to fight the legion and some of them became corrupted and served the legion.
The timeline of Demon Hunters is pretty strict, you were either in the vault of the wardens for those last 10 years between TBC and Legion as a prisioner, or you were in Mardum fighting demons (There is a NPC that stayed there), or if you want to deviate from that, you could have escaped the wardens and the alliance and horde, remaining in hiding during those 10 years in Outland, and once you’ve heard that the Demon Hunters were being accepted in society, you went back.
It seems demon hunters develop most of their powers by absorbing the soul of consuming the bodies of demons, so how you develop your own powers might have something to do with that.
I’m actually trying to write my Devil Hunter as well, but i’m struggling to make one that is not an edgelord or an illidan fanboy.

Thank so much for the great info!
I very much agree… I’m writing mine with a lost family sort of trope. I think it lends itself well to a motivation for going into the Shadowlands in hopes to be reunited. Not getting into edgelord territory is difficult!
I always liked the idea of once the legion was defeated and the DHs now not knowing their purpose the wardens could have come along and offered to join their ranks. Plenty of baddies out there that need capturing or eliminating and ,if they choose to, a DH could be a sort of psuedo-warden, traveling the land making it safe.
After starting the Demon Hunter role last night, I’m seriously considering bringing in a demon hunter to my crew of RP characters as well. As I haven’t really played since Cata, I’m following this partially to help myself with lore, but I wanted to chime in to one of your questions.
In terms of what they’re doing for BFA and why they may only be learning the true extent of his power during the BFA story. If you’re thinking of going more with a lost family sort of trope, I think leaning heavily on the “Finding something worth fighting for” trope might be beneficial.
Demon Hunters believe that everything is worth giving up to achieve their goals, and giving the ultimate sacrifice (from what I’ve learned during what I’ve played for the opening playthrough for that class). From what I gather, most demon hunters lost everything to the demons when they raided Azeroth, and could do nothing to stop it. So they’re harnessing demon power as a means to fight fire with fire.
What made your character choose the demon hunter role? What were they before? Simple civillian? A warrior? Priest? Druid? Mage? What made them turn to Demon Hunter? What did they lose that either encouraged them to become a demon hunter, and what did they sacrifice to become one?
If family is their new driving force, have they found their family? Is something threatening their family? What are they going to do to stop it? What will they do to protect those they love?
Finding their strength could be less that it’s a newly aquired strength/magic/whatever, and more that it’s now a personal drive for them to do better and achieve greater heights than they previously thought possible.
I like this! A thought I had today was to have the character be a civilian prior to joining the Illidari. When he is imprisoned, he will not yet be trained fully. When the events of Legion roll out, I was thinking he might be involved more in outfitting the Demon Hunter forces, which would lead him to undergo most of his training during the conflict of BFA
