From https://wowpedia.fandom.com/wiki/Warcraft_III_evolution_guide:

I want to highlight the following line from the Alpha Story line description and one of the bullet points in the article.

As civil strife rages through the nations of the Alliance, the lands of Azeroth undergo strange changes, and the threat of a new, unseen foe draws near.

  • There were several mentions about the Alliance of Lordaeron falling into civil war prior to the start of the game, including the Battle.net description of the Footmen and the original one of the Paladins. It seems that, while the Horde was to return to its honorable and shamanistic roots, the Alliance was meant to be fragmented by greed and treachery in order for both factions to find some common ground and then unite against the Legion. Since it was released even before Warcraft III, the Of Blood and Honor novel was probably intended to start depicting the bad sides of the Alliance.

Day of the Dragon does it too. Although it was mainly due to Deathwings influence on certain key members of the Alliance.

Thats true and Lord of the Clans had a brief moment of it with Blackmore’s musing of the Alliance and why he thought his plan for Thrall would succeed. He viewed the Alliance as a triangle of bigotry and prejudice in which man mocked dwarf, elves were haughty towards man, and dwarves sneered at elves. And yes he didn’t factor in the gnomes in his musing.

And with the way Blizzard had it done, in the alpha story it helped illustrate the road to civil strife within the Alliance, and in the current lore it helps showcase how arrogant Blackmore was. Though even in that lore we saw examples of that racism, like Garithos, his emissary, and how none of forces tried to help the blood elves.
