I received a deserter buff for disconnecting in a solo shuffle, which was the standard debuff time, but then when I switched characters, the timer increased, and when I switched characters again, the timer increased again. I’m now up to a 2 hour deserter buff from only one match disconnecting.

I thought the old system was tough.
pretty sure this was not a bug, it was in the beta.
The part about the timer increasing just by switching characters isn’t in the description in the WowHead article, as far as I can tell.
The debuff sticking to all characters in the account while continuing to tick down would make sense.
