In what way was it ever good on paper?
There are servers that still have layering? Cause the layering on my server was removed like 2 months after launch.
Classic does have dynamic mob spawn rates, or it did at launch, resulting in some fairly crazy mob spawn behavior in the questing zones. I greatly prefer the current spawn rates for most mobs.
I actually enjoyed having two layers on Pagle for a few weeks. The player base learned to manage them and we had a more reasonable chance of being able to farm mats out in the world. I miss being able to farm thorium in Azshara, it was chill and relaxing.
But I doubt the layers actually worked as Blizz intended, bc players just hacked the system and stacked ourselves on one really full layer, leaving the other layer as a more empty farming layer. It can’t have really helped server loads much.

First, YOU suggest a better fix to the cornovirus and the pandememic lockdown – which has not happened EVER in the US. Forget 16 years.
Then you can criticize Blizzard for not having a handy-dandy fix to something that has not happened EVER.

Corporations have 0 loyalty to anyone other than their shareholders, this cynical view grow stronger in me every single day, and that’s just plain sad.

I am sorry, I have yet to see any evidence that layering is bad either on paper or in practice.
Also it is quite clear that layering was amazingly successful at its job at launch and without it the damage would have been exponentially worse due to the mass player drop off that happened.
We don’t need layer anymore after banning all bots.

Queues are more damaging to the game than layers.
Have you considered transferring to a realm without layers? I mean, personally I don’t mind if they remove layering and return to queues, but that doesn’t seem fair to all the people waiting in queues.
Only the servers with large enough populations to warrant layers have them, and there’s no reason to stay on them, if you absolutely have to play without layers.
Diversity of server populations, and balance exists, and we can make our own decisions.

Yeah. I too would be fine with queues.
And someone said I could take a vacation and go anywhere I wanted to this March/April. Things changed.
If you want high pop and no layering, I think you’re out of luck.
We have layering on the higher pop (full/locked) servers. That’s a trade off. If you absolutely will not play on a server with layering, you have options, but (as will most things), there are trade offs that come with those options.
6 hour queues, bad in theory, bad in practice.
