For real. At this point, it’s taking up too much art time to supply armor for only 2 classes, and compared to the other 3 armor types, the mail sets never look good. There’s a few that are okay, but they are rare. It feels like mail sets are usually an afterthought from the art department, probably due to only being used by two classes.
As for existing mail armor, don’t touch it. Hunter and Shaman can still wear and mog mail, but new mail armor will not be created in the future. (This is just so heirlooms, twink sets, and current sets don’t become unusable.)
This is a bit of a stretch, but as for the armor types they should be? In order to make the armor sets a 4 x 4 x 4 combo, move shaman into plate. (They use mail reinforced by the earth, so it fits.) And as for hunters? They move down to cloth. (They gain a passive to grant them more armor to fix the survivability issue that would arise). Just add agility to both of the armor types.
You might say “But cloth doesn’t fit hunter”, but… it kinda does.
Rexxar, arguably the most famous hunter, is very clearly in cloth armora apart from his shoulders, which arguably could still be cloth with how WoW’s designs are.
There’s also some lore figures with mixed classes like Tyrande, who wear obvious cloth.
Not only would it fit, it would mean the art team could be more creative with cloth gear. Instead of robes and soft armor, they can make the armor sometimes look like something you’d wear in a battle.
Now, if you’re planning to add tinker, for instance, then make one of them cloth and one of them leather, which would put us at 4/5/4 once Tinker is released. Or if you’re planning on Necromancer, then give hunters leather and shaman plate. That’d give us 4/5/4.
The entire point of this is mail armor is outdated, and art team resources are being wasted having to make sets for only 2 classes. It’s not the same as making a glaive for demon hunters, as a glaive is quick, a set takes a while.
Plus, one could argue that mail armor is really just a lesser plate armor, so hunters and shaman could both arguably wear plate just fine. That would result in a 3/4/5 situation, so unless the next class is cloth, I don’t think that’d be the best.
