Deathmaw taming

Have any hunters managed to find and tame Deathmaw? Is there a trick to his spawn, or is it completely random? Are the Ember Worgs placeholders i.e. killing them will help spawn Deathmaw?

First comment I read on that was a guy talking about how he tamed it and his advice for taming it.

Sort by popularity and make sure that Wowhead is set to classic mode in the top right near the search box. It’s possible you’re looking at the BfA version of the page.

Taming itself won’t be the problem, it’s finding him. From that post:

I wanted to know if anyone knew definitively how to spawn the mob, or if it’s even possible. Or is it on a random timer? No-one seems to know.

As far as I know, there are NO rares that are spawned like this in vanilla. They are all on timers with pretty wide ranges like 12-36 hours. Everyone would always theorize that killing mobs could make them spawn sooner because they would act as placeholders, but this has been debunked quite a few times and I even remember doing this for a rare in the plaguelands.

I can’t remember which one it was, but it was some scarlet rare and people would swear that killing the mobs would make it spawn sooner because one of them was acting as a placeholder, but I sat there for hours and hours, nobody attacked a single mob and viola! The npc spawned on his own.

I Havn’t found him yet… I go out and have a look every now and again… But there are many people in the Burning Steps, so chances are someone’s killed him…

I’ll find him one day…

so I quickly put him on passive and feigned. Luckily he gave up on the aggro

Feign death sometimes not stopping aggro from the perspective of a vanilla player? Hmm…

Thanks for the replies guys. I’ve actually given up and tamed a Slavering Worg in Shadowfang Keep.

The mob has the exact same attack speed as Deathmaw (1.2), the same model, and is trivial to find and tame. The only issue is leveling him up.
