Blizzard can certainly be bad at future-proofing things. For example, Legion was designed with the mindset that Demon Hunter would be the final class ever added to the game. They had to make some modifications to Legion questing content in order to be able to add Evoker.
Currently, it is literally impossible for new races to be Death Knights ever again, at least not without MAJOR retcons (probably using time travel at this point), because they decided it was a good idea to permanently end the Lich King and the ability to raise Death Knights forever in Shadowlands.
Sucks if you want to main Death Knight while playing the newest race because thatâs probably not happening anymore.
If they ever somehow do another wave of new Death Knights for new races, I hope they actually future-proof it this time so they donât have to create an entirely new starting questline and a new flavor for one of the class abilities every time they want to add new races to Death Knight.

Nope! More little dragons running around! Add in the Sethrak too so we can have snakes as well as dragons!
Sethrak > Fake Dragon lizards
no new DKs are made since the Lich King is dead. Drakthyrs were frozen when lich king was making DKs.

we donât need the lich king to make more DKs.
Maybe. First gen were created through simple necromancy and warlock magic containing the soles of dead orcs, forced into the bodies of humans, and were more spellcaster then knight.
The other three generations were all created by a Lich King wearing the Helm of Domination. As far as I know no new death has been created since the Helm was shattered.
There may still be way to create DKs like us, but it as yet does not canonically exist. Something along the way of using the Crown of Wills since it was forged from the shards of the Helm.

lorewise undead priests are all shadow because the light has abandoned all undead, when they made the game, they modified this to âundead priest healers are hurt when they use the lightâ to explain why the priest class for undead could heal. lore does not matter and can be rewritten, and in some cases, probably should be rewritten as there was malicious intent to scuttle the story behind some of the writing.
because first gen DKs exist in lore, DKs exist in lore with or without the lich king or the helm of domination. would they be the exact same? no, the eye color difference would indicate a different mixture of magics/incantations were used to make gen3/4 vs gen1.
what this means for in game gameplay is that any and every race can be made into a DK, the lore doesnât have to be perfect as you could have a dracthyr made via gen1 magics but have blue frosty eyes like a gen3, but the reality is that new players arenât going to be making that toon, and even if they were, the mistake of thinking their dragon was raised by bolvar is inconsequential. even then, the bolvar intro for allied races could just be duplicated but in acherus with the 4 horsemen.
You donât logistically need the lich king, but all DKs were made before WotLK by the scourge, they joined Horde and Alliance because they broke free from the will of the lich king. Making new ones requires turning the dead into DKs, and itâs evil like the scourge. Lore-wise neither the alliance nor horde do that.
The Ebonblade will make new DKs if the fate of the world is in dire peril. If new DKs were to be raised again, weâd need a new artifact on par with the 3 artifacts from Legion or Frostmourne to do so, Id imagine.
Its also possible that rogue factions of the scourge in Northrend would also be seeking a way to raise death knights for their ranks.
Its hard to say at this point whats happening though since weâve gotten very little updates to the activities of the Ebonblade or even Northrend since the conversation between Bolvar and Darion at the end of SL.

Please point to the lore that indicates these following things;
- That the undead cannot use nature or life oriented magic. (Hint: Forsaken Monks exist.)
- That Draenei cannot use fel magic. (Hint: Yes, they can.)
- That Bolvar is somehow required to create new Death Knights. (Hint: He isnât, your troop recruiter in Legion directly referenced new DKs being created regularly.)
Thereâs no lore that dictates class locks being strictly necessary. If a Forsaken Holy Priest can exist, whatâs to stop a dracthyr from being raised?
Blizzard having not done something yet because there are other things to do does not, in-fact, directly translate to lore.
The key issue with that isnât Bolvar himself. Arthus created the first version of our type of DK, and Nerâzhul made his own like us. The thing we donât have now is the Helm of Domination, or by extension a Lich King. We may well need that as part of the magic to create our version of a DK, itâs not been fully explored yet. We do know that we havenât created new ones since the start of Shadowlands when the Crown was destroyed.
It wouldnât be hard to come up with a lore reason to make new races into death knights (or just ignore lore) but as yet Blizzard has made no indication that they will. I fully expect dracthyr will see paladin and shaman (maybe with some primal appearance options) before we see DK ones.
first gen DKs predate the helm of domination. also we have access to the shadowlands and can basically use any necromantic magic we feel like, there is a library on the bottom floor of acherus.
Races that came after WotLK shouldnât be able to be Death Knights. You donât look or sound cool when you play your allied race as DK, you just look and sound stupid.
Just imagine being a DK but actually you were raised by Bolvar in the fourth war, when all the other DKs that came before literally fought to escape Arthasâ mind control, fought against the Scourge after killing their own kind and other innocents in cold blood, and both factions hated them, and then you live as an outcast because of that. And then we have the new DKs that were raised by a trash character that is Bolvar in Shadowlands, that didnât pass through any of this and are just there with no meaning of their own.
Shadowlandsâ lore (unfortunately) made it possible for allied races to be DKs, it doesnât mean itâs good, these DKs are simply of an inferior position. Your allied race DK doesnât look or sound cool, it looks and sounds stupid.
About Dracthyr, in my opinion they should have remained restricted to Evoker.

Yes, and it was Thassarian who raised Koltira as a Death Knight, not Arthas directly. DKs can make DKs.
Although it doesnât make sense that DKs would do that once they know how horrible it is, even raising those DKs in the Legion campaign wasnât much accurate.
Itâs cute to watch people try to use lore as a reason we canât have more DK races. Lightforged locks and Tauren rogues would like a word with youâŠ
I disagree with both. Also orc priest. By the way LF DK would never make any logical sense since the dead canât use the light.

I wouldnât mind a Drakthyr DK. They⊠actually start to grow on me a bit.
As for lore reason? Reminder that they turned Arthas into 35 anima. SoâŠ

First gen were death knights in name, but completely different then us. Disembodied ork souls put into the bodies of dead Stormwind knights via warlock magics, and were largely casters not magic fuels warriors.
The latter three generations were reanimated people infused with domination magic via the Helm. We also arenât just normal raised undead either, weâre a special class of undead. Officially we havenât made any new of us since the start of Shadowlands. Wether that means we canât full stop, or just havenât tried is unknown. With going back to Northrend here in the next few expansions weâll probably find out then.
They can though, it just hurts them, and thatâs only counting those whoâve been animated via Death magics. We have undead reanimated with Light magic now and maybe for them itâll be opposite. Light flows free and death magic hurts them to use.
Why not? There is no physical or metaphysical reason a tauran canât sneak and backstab people or a LF space goat to call on fel magic and summon daemons.
Social and cultural reasons maybe, but our characters are Big Dang Heroes and break such molds.
