cant they just restart the servers?
Shoot, I had to reboot my computer and now can’t get in!! I shouldn’t have rebooted… lol
A DDoS(Distributed Denial of Service) attack it where many machines(PC’s, hijacked consoles, cell phones, whatever) are used to send a lot of requests of a particular kind to specific targets, all at once and from many different locations, resulting in the target’s servers, network, databases, etc. being overwhelmed and unable to function the way they need to. For smaller cloud environments, that are self managed, these can be incredibly hard to stop. Blizzards gaming network and servers likely fall into this category. Restarting their servers or networks will not resolve the issue. The traffic from the large number of different devices, likely from a large region or even globally distributed, would need to be stopped/blocked. Often, when these are done, they leverage many machines, from many different IP address ranges that include IP from other legitimate services and to simply block them all would potentially block some users. I know, so what. If Blizzard is still self hosting, they’re in a pickle of their own making to be frank. If they are hosted by one of the larger cloud hosting environments such as Amazon or Azure then they are going to have to wait for those companies to mitigate this by spreading the traffic across so many network devices, and heuristically identifying attack patters to be discarded, that the impact is no longer an issue while they deal with identifying, reporting and blacklisting IPs. Generally speaking, DDoS attacks against targets hosted in those types of environments are quickly resolved. If they simply have some equipment in some datacenters in different regions, this will likely not stop until the attack stops. But again, there is nothing you or I can do. Nothing at all. There may be very little Blizzard can do as well.

maybe that message is “wrath sucks, stop playing it and go back to retail. leave classic to the vanilla players.”
