[Main Thread] DCs in Stormwind / Elwynn Forest (and other starting zones) on Chigaco Datacenter Servers

EDIT - If you are here from another thread, please post the following.

  1. Realm
  2. Zone(s)
  3. Approximate time between DCs
  4. Whether items are moved in your bags, quests rolled back, etc.

Hopefully this is specific enough to help narrow down the issue.

Many people on Sargeras (and other Chicago DC servers) are getting booted from the World server, but -not- the auth server(s), but it’s only affecting SW and Elwynn Forest (and other starting zones according to posts below). Auth servers aren’t impacted, I can immediately reconnect to the character list without restarting the client or entering my login info. So it’s just the world server.

If the issues 12 hours ago were related to auth servers, it seems this is something different.

Valdrakken etc are alright.

Separately, I’m seeing that Discord is having an outage as well. Both WoW and Discord run on AWS as far as I know, so maybe there’s a cloud provider outage?

Either way - I’m not seeing anything on Twitter, the Launcher, or here in the forums yet regarding this. Hopefully it’s not a niche enough issue to get overlooked somehow.

Known affected realms:

Chicago Datacenter–

  • Sargeras
  • Stormrage
  • Illidan
  • Area52
  • Nazjatar
  • Dalaran
  • Ghostlands
  • Hellscream
  • Andorhal / Scilla
  • Kel’thuzad

Known affected zones:

  • Stormwind
  • Elwynn Forest
  • Durotar
  • Orgrimmar
  • Kelp’thar Forest

Known effects from the DCs (apparent world server crashes):

  • Character progress rollbacks (quests, etc)
  • Items being moved to previous slots in bags
  • Auctions posted -right- before a DC being returned to bags
  • Not being fully DCd, but receiving an “instance not found” chat message while doing nothing. I suspect that it’s trying to split or merge a shard and failing for this one.

Timeframe:
Video recorded - 6:00 apart exactly for most DCs, ranging from 7:00~14:00 for others.

scroll a bit. one mentioned rollbacks too.

Yeah, SW is the most notable for me (frequency), but it has also occurred in Org as well.

Zul’jin server, no issue reconnecting.

Area 52 also. Happens in Stormwind and in Goldshire/surrounding areas.

Correction on the Auctions -

Things I post earlier than 1 min from being DCd are fine and still on the AH when I check.

Items in my bags that I’m moving around are not - they are back to their original position. I don’t use bag addons.

I’m using OBS to record video of it doing this to me, should a Blue come along and want to see / forward it along. I’ve got about 15 mins of footage so far, and the DCs seem pretty consistent at 5 minutes apart.

Other people in general chat are reporting the same.

Okay, recorded for around 30 minutes.

DC #1
1:26

DC #2
7:26

DC #3
13:26

DC #4
21:36

So the first 3 were -exactly- 6 minutes apart, down to the second. But the 4th was 8mins and 10 seconds after the previous one. Strange.

Trying to pull things out of the mailbox gets me DCd within 40 seconds. Maybe hitting some sort of limit with requests?

(Teleporting to Darnassus seems to have fixed the problem for me)

I’ve been having this problem too.

Illidan-US

Just hanging out near Chromie in Stormwind I began repeatedly disconnecting.

It seemed to start around 9-10am EST.

At first the disconnects were spaced about 5-10 minutes apart, but as it neared 11am EST the disconnects had progressed to happening every 1-2 minutes.

Each time I disconnected my recently equipped heirlooms became unequipped and returned to my bag.

I also seemed to completely roll-back the previous ~45 seconds each disconnect.

I am suspicious that this is being caused by a bad actor ie hackers/dupers. This is anecdotal, but it “feels” a lot like the first weeks of Dragonflight when there was rampant duping occuring on the AH. I think there may be some players purposefully overloading the AH somehow to force these roll-back disconnects and in the process force duping of AH items.

It took me 4 disconnects to make it from chromie to the SW docks, but since teleporting to Darnassus I have been able to stay properly connected for ~15 minutes now.

The SW disconnects seem to have stopped. At 9 minutes now and nothing.

Edit: Spoke too soon - DC at 14:00 into session.

This would not explain why it’s only happening in one zone, on one datacenter.

WoW continents have their own “world server”, Kalimdor, E.K., Outland etc are all segregated. Your game is connected to at least 2 IP addresses at all times - one is the authentication server, the other your current world server.

This seems to have been limited to a single datacenter, single world server.

WoW is hosted (afaik) on AWS, and other AWS hosted services have also had issues in the last few hours - a notable one being Discord.

Pretty sure it was an AWS availability issue.

Next DC : 7 mins on the dot from the last.

I’ve DC’d about 5 times in the last 30 minutes. I was on Stormrage in the Troll starting zone.

These constant DCs are still happening. Not a good look for an original starter zone with lots of low level playets getting dumped to the login screen every 5min.

I’ve been trying to mine in durotar and am getting dc’d every few minutes.

Alright,

All of the realms so far have still been the Chigago datacenter.
Sargeras
Stormrage
Illidan
Area52
Nazjatar
Dalaran

Multiple starting zones (and their capital cities if attached directly).
SW/Elwynn Forest
Org/Durotar

DCs are (by my recordings) primarily 6 mins apart on the dot, with outliers at 7mins and 14mins.

I tried seeing if making multiple requests to the server would DC me faster (pulling a lot of items from the mail, posting a lot of auctions), and had one DC that seemed to happen directly after - but that could have been coincidential.

Getting “instance not found” now in chat, while standing here doing nothing. Maybe it’s trying to merge / split shards and failing?
