Oakheart has an extreme issue for both prot warriors and prot paladins. The crushing grip removes you from your consecrate DR (25-35% DR).
When a warrior is picked up, you cannot block, you cannot generate rage to use ignore pain because you can’t shield slam because he can decide to pick you up so you are faced away from him (it’s RNG which facing you get), all you can do is alternate between Demo shout and shield wall-- and these will never keep you alive on any moderate tyrannical key.
For prot paladins— you can’t even use bubble during the crushing grip.
In Legion, you were always facing him when he picked you up; so this seems like a bug. Also, I’m a prot warrior who always pre-casts Shield Wall or Last Stand right before he does it. Tanks will need to use their timers for now, but yes they need to fix this.
maybe not on higher keys? It seems to have worked so far. I got dangerously close to dying on 14 last night even through Last Stand and i was fully topped before going in
I haven’t had this problem in a single DHT this season. Are you facing away from the boss before he picks you up? This is the only reason I could think of that would cause you to be unable to cast while picked up.
Nope. It’s only an issue on my warrior. not on my pally, dk, or brew. He’s night elf, so not a race issue either. My last run, i made sure to be standing RIGHT at this feet, and still no victory rush. This is borderline impossible in keys above 20 without having Impending Victory for every grip…
it still happens to us it’s just less noticeable because we can still use blessed hammer regardless and don’t need a target for WoG so it ends up being a bit less deadly…still a bit dicy keeping SotR up sometimes since it does los us for judgement and still removes us from consecrate
i have a theory i’m going to test next time i’m in there…basically i’m thinking he still locks our direction in when he picks us up…but not our actual position(which is also why we’re losing consecrates effect before the throw) so when he turns around to throw us at someone he ends up behind us, going to try turning him towards the group after the breathe and see if that helps it at all.
update: this actually seems to be whats going on obviously a very small sample size but several dht’s in to testing and i haven’t had it once while it was happening 80% of the time or more previously
This sounds like an extremely recent issue, as I haven’t had a problem being able to spend globals while picked up all season. It didn’t matter how far around he has to turn to throw me after being picked up or anything else.
Two solutions to the consecrate problem. 1) when you tank him, make sure you are right inside his hit box and your consecrate will be under him as he grips you or 2) you drop a fresh consecrate after he picks you up and you will get the DR that way.
Keep in mind the grip damage is magic damage, not physical, so blessing of spell warding is an immunity as well as div. The time between grips is enough for forbearance to fall off so you can effectively immune two in a row and potentially a third if the fight lasts long enough for div to come back off cd.
Lastly, what kills tanks isn’t only the grip itself, but the breath combined with the DOT from it into the grip. It is too much all at once. If you get timers for the breath (this takes some practice so don’t be discouraged) and you get to max melee range/save a horse you can out range the breath mechanic and not have to use any defensive a for it as it will do zero damage. Warriors and DH’s can leap it, monks can roll out etc
I have pushed it a couple times while in the grip and, once I was thrown, it made me lose threat and the boss immediately whomped another person in the party. I don’t push it anymore for that mechanic.
Maybe it is because I did it while in the grasp? I remember a bug with final stand a while back where there was like a fraction of a second where mobs would lose aggro and then I would gain it back in a blink like the talent had a slight delay or something weird. I just figured that that was what was happening on that boss so I have steered clear of using it.
Are you telling me that Final Stand doesn’t in fact taunt tauntable mobs in range when Divine Shield is used?
For almost the entirety of M+'s lifetime where this talent existed, it has worked on M+ bosses unless they were specifically flagged as “Boss” (i.e. player level +3 instead of +2 like most). If that’s been changed in DF it’s news to me, as our paladin players were doing it on bosses without issue in BFA and SL.
Raid bosses are and have been a completely separate topic and functionality related to that talent.
I’ve seen this bug reported a few months ago so it wouldn’t surprise me if there is still some wacky behavior happening.
EDIT: Come to think of it, that bug report was complaining about Z-axis differences between your character and the mobs causing Final Stand to fail to taunt them. So if you shield during the grip instead of pre-casting then perhaps that’s why? Bizarre bug if it’s still in play.
I figured it had some distance/weird interaction during grip so I push something else instead. That is the only place final stand fails me right now. It was wonky some time ago but that was fixed thankfully.
I only cap out around 20s on my tank (it is an alt) and I am not sure if DBM alerts me to when grip happens so I usually just wing it lol.
