Dark Iron Shaman

I’ve never really RP’d before but plan to join an RP light guild soon. I was hoping for some tips on how to RP effectively as a Dark Iron dwarf shaman?

Cheers!

Edit: I understand I should try and speak with a Scottish esque accent and that shamans relate to the elements but that’s about all I’ve got. Any tips and or resources would be highly appreciated.

Interact with other Dark Iron NPC’s. From the Rise of the Horde novel, Orc shamans pretty much talk the same as other orcs. Observe how Dark Iron NPC’s interact. That should get you started.

Hi, and welcome to RP! I hope you enjoy your time

I’m no expert on dwarves, but here’s what I’ve cobbled together. The more you can know about your race, the better. But, that’s a lot to digest if you’re just getting started. I’ve included a detail compilation below, but if you can just stick to these six highlights, you’ll be off to a great start!

Highlights

  1. Dark Irons are typically highly determined and have short tempers!
  2. Your character spent some portion of their life subjugated by Ragnaros the Firelord, but has been free for about fifteen years.
  3. Your character is likely from Shadowforge City in Blackrock Mountain.
  4. Your character likely views the elements as tools for power more than something to be respected/venerated.
  5. Don’t worry too much about the accent. Throw in some aye’s, and say “me” instead of “my” or “mine”. Maybe say “ye” instead of “you”.
(Aye! What do ye think of me accent?)
  6. Most dwarves have a love of alcohol and a high tolerance for it, but that doesn’t mean they’re all drunks, or that your character has to like it at all!

Full Details

First, it’s always good to have a high-level understanding of the most recent events in WoW Lore. I have written a full summary in a previous post, but the highlights are this:

Now, Shadowlands as well: The sky above Icecrown is shattered, and the Scourge is running wild.

It’s also good to read up on your race’s history! Here’s a link to the wiki article. It’s about a 5-10 minute read.

The summary is this: The three dwarven clans were unfriendly to each other. The Dark Irons summoned Ragnaros the Fire Lord to defeat the other clans, but instead he enslaved them. Dozens of years later, the Alliance and Horde killed the Dark Iron emperor and Ragnaros. Moira Thaurissan becomes Regent-Queen, attempts to overthrow Ironforge, but fails. Afterwards, the Dark Irons eventually join the Alliance, fully becoming members as of two years ago.

You’ll definitely want to consider your character’s relationship with the fire element, seeing as he was likely subjugated by Ragnaros for some time. Most shamans believe that it’s their duty to serve the elements. However, a Dark Iron dwarf might see the elements more as a tool. He’s likely going to primarily use the fire element, but not in reverence, just as a source of power. Did his time under Ragnaros teach him to siphon the energy directly from the elemental plane? Does he simply force the elements to obey with sheer will power? Or did he subjugate a fire elemental? Alternatively, does he have a healthy relationship with the elements? If so, why is he different from others of his clan?

Lastly, looking up some general traits of your race is good too! General dwarf traits are also good! However, these are general patterns and may or may not apply to any specific character.

The short of it is this:

Predominantly, Dark Iron dwarves are known for their fiery tempers and fierce determination.

A few other traits that are fun to note:

  1. Dwarves are known for their love of ale. However, they aren’t hopeless drunks.
  2. They typically worship the elements, the Light, and the Titan Pantheon, or nothing at all!
  3. They’re known for craftmanship, particularly metalsmithing. Maybe give him a side job as an armor, weaponsmith, jeweler, or whatever!
  4. The Dark Iron clan practices sorcery, and likely introduced it to other dwarven clans. They’re probably the most magically-adept of Dwarven clans.
  5. They feel a strong connection to their ancestors.
  6. They typically carry their own food and drink with them, even to social events where food and drink is provided.
  7. They like rest, and can’t sleep well without pillows.

Accents are fun! Definitely something to slip into your RP. However, you want to be wary of overdoing the accent. Trying to make text look too much like speech-sounds can make it nearly unreadable. I’d just stick to these replacements.

  1. Replace “yes” with “aye”.
  2. Replace “no” with “nay”.
  3. Replace “my” and “mine” with “me”.
  4. Replace “you” with “ye”. Maybe “your” with “yer”.
  5. Replace “of” with "o’ ".

I hope that helps!
