Recently returned. I’ve been thinking about changing the race of my old warlock into either a dark iron dwarf or a night elf? Race mechanics set aside, which race do you think has the most potential from a story perspective and roleplay?
I just want some thoughts and maybe I can get my dusty brain chugging along.
I can think of a few angles for Night Elf Warlocks. The most general of these, one that would fit any race easily, would be that of a scholar, or someone of similar vocation or interest, seeking to learn about demons and/or Fel magic. Examples of such a character may include Vestia Moonspear (replacing Arcane with Fel) and Daio the Decrepit.
The Night Elves’ history with the Legion can also be a factor in several ways; survivors of the War of the Ancients being drawn to the powers the Legion wields, a Demon Hunter like path entailing using Fel and enslaving demons against the Legion, and perhaps some others that have yet to come to me. Mind you, technically both of these could also be used for any race, however Night Elves arguably have the extra benefit of utilizing portions of canon history, at least to an extent.
Overall the Night Elves’ relationship with the Legion, with the War of the Ancients and subsequent War of the Satyr, along with the likely common dispositions among Kaldorei society, make for a decent amount of material to work with compared to Dark Iron. I do still think there’s probably a decent amount of potential with them, but I feel I am a bit biased towards Night Elves, having held an interest in them longer.
Night Elves are a bit of a painful race to RP. Their history is convoluted and contradictory in terms of actual events and themes, because so many different things have been done over the years to it, usually never aligning with what already existed or the themes in place. Expect RPing one to feel like fighting blizzard sometimes lmao.
Dark Irons, like Dwarves in general, are ignored. Lmao in fact they never even bother to address where flaming beards came from in BfA, so most old school Dark Iron RPers i know just blatantly say they don’t have flaming hair IC. But because they’re neglected but had a fairly open resolution to their plot, the sky is the limit for their potential in the world now.
For Warlocks specifically: Dark Irons are all about magic in general, including fel. You can still feel fringe and occult because the race itself still kind of is, without being “hated” as much in character. Night Elves we have nothing really for in terms of cultural acceptance. The Illidari were accepted into either faction, but throughout the depictions of NEs since BfA, nothing has ever been done to suggest they’ve actually integrated back into their society in really any capacity.
No race has more potential than what you bring into it. The racial differences in the main are little more than trappings, history, and cultural preconceptions.
I think Night Elf Warlock has a lot of potential. Mostly because both arcane and fel magics - especially fel magic - are forbidden by the Night Elves in general. I think this would be enough of a hook into the lore to inspire the RP but also enough open-endedness to give you some liberty with the RP, since there are very few Night Elves that practice fel magic.
I made mine a former Druid that lives in felwood. Called it a Felweaver. Sling curses, shoot green fire, feed of the high fel energies of felwood, and more of a demonic spider form.
However I like interesting combos and I would say dark iron warlock is preety on the nose compared to the intricate and intrigue of a night elf warlock. So NE gets my vote!
