As a both WoW and Warhammer 40k fan, I was thinking about how much better WoW’s lore would be if it had a SET (and almost never changing) series of lore rules, like Warhammer 40k, and have expansions be like campaigns/self contained stories instead of a continuum evolving story arc.
Both W40k and WoW have incredibly strong background lore (the old gods, the lich king, etc. the horus heresy, the emperor of mankind, etc), but WoW tries too hard to evolve its own lore constantly (see the “next, bigger, baddie”, the constant escalation) and in the long run (9 expansions in) it became so ridiculous that it’s basically almost a joke.
I would really love to see Dan Abnett (Horus Rising, Eisenhorn trilogy + Marvel and DC works and much much more…) working on a WoW campaign/expansion. And then having other authors working on other expansions.
I know that W40K has evolving stuff as well, but not evolving as fast as WoW.
Maybe it’s a silly idea, but I’d love to go back to a lore that I enjoy and don’t play the game game just for mechanics/collecting things.

No. I don’t want to see a competent person writing anything Warcraft. I don’t want to care about the story. I don’t want it to be good. It needs to remain the steaming pile of nonsense it was always intended to be.

That is such an unbelievably bad idea.
The entire story forever would be retconned literally every expansion bare minimum in large amounts.

Although they have made some questionable decisions…
The problem for most players isn’t the writing, it’s the in-game presentation of the writing.
(IMO) Most WoW players don’t want the FF14 style cutscenes that take entirely to long…but they need more than what WoW currently offers
As many have pointed out, you shouldn’t have to read books and 3rd party websites to figure out what is going on

Swapping out writers for each project didn’t work out real well for the Star Wars sequels.

As much as I like Dan Abnett I’d rather not have him writing WoW. I think Brandon Sanderson would do a much better job with the series. Or any of the top tier fantasy writers.
Robin Hobb or L.E. Modesitt please.

Heck there’s some up and coming writers I think could really benefit from writing for the Warcraft IP. Take the spotlight away from Christie. She’s an alright writer but she seems genuinely exhausted with what Blizzard wants.
Honestly he’d probably do it in an afternoon.

I see nothing wrong with the current direction, just saying.
And it’d probably be amazing. At least the fight scenes. The core Warcraft devs would likely force him into a crappy plot.
Part of the reason we don’t have a lot of story consistency is a constant treadmill of quest writers so this is already a thing and a part of the issue.
