Damage while leveling

Alright so my friend mentioned to me while leveling that rogue damage seems to be low compared to other classes in our dungeon runs. Is there something she’s doing wrong, is there a certain level that rogue dps starts to pick up or is leveling rogue just doomed to slack behind other classes in damage?

I can’t speak to what level it improves, but the short answer is: yes, definitely lower at lower levels as compared to others. I remember being in a group with an arcane mage and getting destroyed, DPS wise. Same for Aff locks at this point, I’d imagine, with MR.

I’m still working on my Vulpera rogue but things come a bit slower to her, DPS wise and ability/talent wise. I’ve heard it picks up once you get to 50 but in particular, rogues are at a disadvantage this way while leveling.

Hopefully she can ignore it and just enjoy leveling! It will even out later on. So long as she enjoys the mechanics of the class, I think that’s what matters.

All Arcane Mages have to do is literally spam Arcane Explosion and top every meter, which is why they are so irrelevant during leveling.

Damage for Rogues only start picking up after you get Blade Flurry for Outlaw or Venomous Wounds for Assassination. Sub has inferior AoE damage until level 52, so don’t even bother with it for AoE damage.

tell your friend damage while leveling doesnt matter. Rogues can do decent damage while leveling, but without the full kit, you will run into issues that feels off while leveling. Only thing while leveling is keep SND up because your white melee hits will account for most of your damage. It is best to just reach max level then look into dps comparisons.

what problems does having low damage present while leveling? which levels are the most problematic?

Thanks for the replies!

I’m honestly not too sure, maybe it has something to do with making sure you’re pulling off the right rotation. I will relay to her what I read here though.

I just leveled another rogue as sub (I’ll be leveling another as combat, and then I’m going to do another as assassination so I can see what it’s like while leveling) and dungeon wise I felt ok, certainly nothing like other classes and abysmal in AoE. Black powder being locked behind level 52 is rough. The biggest thing I noticed, and this was in questing/dungeons was survivability. I felt like I wasn’t wearing armor at times, the nerf to vial is rough and Cloak of shadows being locked behind level 47 is extremely harsh. I was struggling to pull multiple mobs and not be in danger of dying even taking soothing darkness and being undead so I could cannibalize.

I agree on the survivability. I struggle against more than one mob in Cataclysm content. Outlaw/Assassination feels incredibly bad until 37. Even after 37 it still feels awful. Leveling this rogue has been miserable.

I’ve done Warlock, Demon Hunter, Death Knight, Shaman, Rogue, and Paladin so far 1-50 and the only thing that felt like it had a worse time surviving was Enhance shaman (Although you can go resto and just face roll through all content and other players).

I get that 1-50 isn’t really on their radar, nor have they ever particularly cared about the leveling experience outside of current content (and even then not really) but some classes it’s just rough. In general if you can tank or heal you’re solid, though I leveled the paladin as ret and had no problems mass pulling,. Some classes have key abilities/passives too far up in the levels, like enhance shaman’s crash lightning at 34 or 38.

I had been leveling a vulp rogue as sub presquish, got to 30something. Got squished to 13, capped today. I do have full looms, gale striking and force mult for weaps, the satyr enchant on the neck. I didn’t do dungeons but I didn’t really notice issues while questing unless it was a wanted quest, or the group mobs during assaults (can’t solo those). I changed to combat at level 40ish, but kept changing back and forth. In all earnest, it went fast (about 18 hours?) And I didn’t have many survivability issues, IMO, just judicious use of sap and blind.
