Dalaran Crater Added When?

Hey there, this is strictly out of curiosity. When Dalaran is removed from Hillsbrad and sent floating to Crystalsong we are all aware that the Dalaran Crater is left behind. I do not believe we ever really see or know exactly when this raising of Dalaran happens though, either end of BC or start of WotLK has always been my assumption. Anyway, can anyone tell me the patch where the Dalaran Crater was actually added? Was it truly right at the start of WotLK? Or was there a point where in the lore Dalaran is floating but the big purple dome from vanilla was still there? I could look through all the patch notes but I am lazy, sorry!

I thought it was right at the end of BC but I could be wrong. I would have to look it up to find out exactly.

Agreed: It was at the start of WotLK…

Dalaran Crater showed up at the launch of Wrath (not patch 3.0). The pink bubble as still there at the end of TBC. Part of the oft-overlooked Wrath storyline wherein Malygos goes nuts, declares war on mortal magic users and redirects all magical ley lines on Azeroth to the Nexus. The Kirin Tor respond by heading north and beating him up.

It was a weird shield still in Classic, yeah? I bet it would have been in WoTLK.

Okay yea I thought it would have had something to do with the Malygos storyline. Okay understood so it was added at launch but not actually in patch 3.0, I am looking at some other things and it looks like patch 3.0.2 is where it is first mentioned. Honestly the fact it is “there” in vanilla and through BC (but not really since it was just an emptty dome meant to represent where the city was, but I get it, it was ruined in the Third War so they were rebuilding the Violet Citadel) and then just magically shows up by the time WotLK starts without any real cinematic or other big lore explanation other than a few questgivers has always messed me up. I have always felt the timeline on it is just sort of vague. Thanks for the confirmation though!

Has some really great information about Dalaran and it’s history.

Thank you so much, I have been on the various wiki like that as well and read good chunks of it to familiarize myself with everything. I played WC3 back in the day but not the other WC titles so some of the lore I am fuzzy on. But in terms of the in game stuff about it it just always felt weird that Dalaran was a footnote for Vanilla and BC and all of a sudden it is back in LK for players without very much explanation. I just consider it a bit of a missed opportunity. Think of a Wrathgate cinematic but for the raising of Dalaran, that would have been pretty cool!

We likely didn’t get a cinematic for that. Far as I recall Wrathgate was the first ingame cinematic. If there had been anything it would have been in the expansion trailer but I don’t recall seeing it.

I remember when that crater happened. I was horde originally and me and my buddies always found it interesting that there was a shielded city on Lordaeron Lake, wondering what would eventually happen with it. When they moved it I remember the convo in ventrilo. “Dude, the city is gone!” “Wait really? What’s there now?” “It’s just a big hole, man!”
