Just went to play Combat/Outlaw rogue for the first time in a while, and I can’t use my dispatch because it’s saying I need a “1 handed melee weapon”
I have a dagger equipped which:
- Is 1 handed
- Is a melee weapon.

Sorry, are you talking about WoW Classic? Combat used to want a slow main hand and a fast off hand, could be sword and dagger, or two swords (at least, it could on my human rogue?). Some weapons were only main hand or off hand and would not work in the wrong slot, so that might explain what you’re experiencing.
Outlaw in regular WoW is usually sword main hand, dagger off hand.
Dagger is it’s own class. As such, it can’t be a main hand for several Outlaw abilities.
It’s a Blizzard thing. Go figure.
I always keep a non-dagger in my inventory just in case I ever decide to play Outlaw.
Blizzard wants outlaw to remain the “slow MH” spec so it is arbitrarily enforced by making some abilities not usable without a slow MH. Outlaw only fully functions with a sword, mace, axe or fist weapon in the main hand. A dagger is fine for the offhand (better depending on stats).
Back in the day when many abilities scaled off weapon damage this wasnt necessary because slow weapons had higher damage but they rejigged their melee ability damage formula a few expansions ago.
A better kicker is this, Enh Shamans can wield daggers but can’t use abilities either. Redic.
The point is that it doesn’t fit the fantasy of the spec
Its amusing because this was a change that came in legion with the whole pirate theme ( saberslash anyone?) they just never reverted dispatch from requiring swords maces or fistweapons.
Don’t worry op arms cant use mortal strike with a 1hander either lol even though you could since day 1 of this game.
