Trying to decide on a new monitor to buy to replace my old 1920x1080 60HZ. It was a cheap monitor when I bought it years ago. I built a new PC earlier this year so handling 2K will be no problem. Looking for some advice from players that use curved screens in these formats.
I know I want to go with a curved screen, just not sure about losing the extra height with the 34".
I rarely play any type of shooter game, mostly WOW, RPG’s some RTS. I think either will be fine for my personal work so that part is not an issue.
Any personal experience with these to help me make my decision will be much appreciated!
Currently own a 34" 3440x1440 curved monitor (100 FPS).
Pros
- Very immersive
- Looks impressive
- Horizontal view and space improved (great in WoW, addons and trackers etc)
Cons
- Requires a very deep desk or the width starts to impinge on your peripheral vision
- Vertical view is limited (I end up zooming out more)
- Very hit and miss if the resolution is supported
- Graphics hungry
Honestly, if I had the chance to go back and buy a monitor all over again I would avoid going Ultrawide. Going 27" 1440p with a decent FPS on a conventional resolution monitor is IMO a better experience. I actually think going Ultrawide has reduced my performance in games.
My plan is to see what happens with the RTX 3080 / AMD and probably sell the ultrawide and go for a conventional 27" in either 1440 or 4k - probably 1440 looking at the lackluster framerates for 4K.
Depends on what kind of games you play and the performance you are after.
1440p is 1440 x 2560, which is 3,686,400 pixels. 1440p ultra wide is 1440 x 3440 which is 4,953,600 pixels. While 4k is, 3840 x 2160 and that is 8,294,400 pixels.
So 1440p ultra wide has about 25% more pixels than normal 1440p, while 4k has 63% more pixels than normal 1440p.
The bright side of 1440p ultra wide is that it has 40% less pixels to drive than 4k, so you can have your cake and eat it too. Personally don’t recommend ultra wide curved displays for the same reasons the user above me has commented. The resolution itself is fine though, just don’t get a curved panel.
It’s much easier to run than 4k and gives you 25% more screen real estate than normal 1440p. Pricing and game adoption will probably be your biggest hurdle though. Since 1440p in general isn’t what’s supposed to replace 1080p. 4k is the next display standard that the industry is trending towards. As is evidenced by the lack of 1440p displays in the laptop market,
I wouldn’t go back to a reg monitor after playing on my ultrawide. I do have a 27" beside it for Minecraft, YouTube and such though.
I agree, I have an Alienware 34in Curved 3440X1440 monitor. It is the easily the single biggest upgrade I have made to my setup. I run with a GTX 2070 GPU and it’s great.
How bad is the blb and glow?
I bought one and it was bad, returned it.
I want another ultrawide badly, but Am unwilling to deal with major panel issues like really bad backlight bleed
Curve and aspect ratio aside, I would opt for 34" 3440x1440 based on DPI alone. At 32", 2560x1440 is going to feel kind of blocky/screen-door looking due to how much the pixels are getting stretched out — you really don’t want to go too far above 27" for that resolution + ratio. 3440x1440 34" on the other hand should have pixels about the same size as those found on 27" 2560x1440 and should look pretty decent at normal viewing distance.
Thank you for the info everyone. I think I am going to go with either a 34" or 35" 3440x1440 ultrawide monitor. For the games I play I think it will be a good fit. Now I’m going to wait and see if Amazon does anything on their upcoming Prime days or I’ll wait until the Black Friday sales. Try and get a deal on a good screen.
Hope you enjoy it! I play on a 27" 1440p/144hz curved monitor and I really like it. I wouldn’t mind trying one of the wider displays, but my setup is primarily for work - I have a 24" and another 27" monitor on my desk, so no room.
I did very well last black Friday - new computers and monitors for myself and my son. Hold out, I’m sure you’ll get a good deal!
I don’t find ultra wide gaming enjoyable. I don’t like things too horizontally spread out.
