Time to convince addon authors to mirror them on wowinterface. That, or “clone” the addon and put it on wowinterface ourselves.
Pretty sure Blizz cant step into other companies business practices and tell them to stop lol
They can block any addon they want. Any addon exclusive to overwolf, for example.
Fair point though I dont see them ever doing that unless something crazy happens that disrupts the majority of the player base.
Off topic: Hows the weather in the Warp these days?
And we both know that is never going to happen. Unless Overwolf crosses some serious red line in Blizzard’s eyes, they are going to stay out of it.
The problem is Overwolf actually does pay and incentivize addon authors to host on Curseforge.
And they do that by having the ads to pay the authors.
By being stubborn and not wanting to see an ad for a few minutes every week, you’re essentially saying you don’t think authors deserve to get paid for their work.
I do understand not wanting Overwolf, I didn’t either, but sites like WoWinterface, Github, etc. don’t pay the authors. Curseforge does. And if I use an addon so religiously, then yes, I think the author should be paid. And since we can’t pay them directly, at least we can help them get some money for their work by sitting through some non-disruptive ads.
I just manually install my addons and always have. I have never ever trusted a client to do it for me.
I also use adblockers in my browser so, there is that too.
Addon authors deserve to get donations and such though, so please remember to toss them a bit if it is something you use often. Most have a voluntary donation link in their addon description or notes somewhere.
All ads are disruptive. The original curse addon client had a hack to strip out all of the ads and enable full auto updates. Hopefully overwolf will get similar treatment.
There are already guides on how to remove ads from the overwolf client if they bother you that much.
However, I do not find a static image I see a few minutes a week as disruptive.
I use WoWUp and Wago App instead of Curseforge these days. The addons are still hosted on Curseforge I think but at least I’m not using the Curseforge App any longer.
There are no ads on my Curseforge app. There’s a box in a lower corner for one. It never shows an ad. I don’t even notice it there. I update all, I exit completely, I’m done.
No.
What paywalls? You open, update, close. There is nothing out of the ordinary to worry about… and run by scumbags? You play WOW though… Bobby?
The reason everyone is upset is because curseforge/overwolf is turning off wowup’s access to the curse api. That means if the addon isn’t hosted anywhere else you won’t be able to download it with wowup.
They lost their access to the API for any addons exclusively on Curse.
No, it asks you during installation if you want the bundled junk. I said yes because I occasionally use Warcraftlogs anyway, but you could definitely opt out.
That said, bundled software is generally a red flag regardless. If I wanted [insert 3rd party thing here], I’d go download it. Finding the download page for any given thing takes like 3 seconds, bundling it with tangentially related software isn’t helpful, it’s sketchy.
It shows one every so often, but in general it’s just the thank you text box.

Imagine complaining about a text box thanking us for having a small unobtrusive ad. One that doesn’t even load most of the time unless you leave the client open for a while.
And no, that Ukraine banner isn’t an ad, it’s literally a Curseforge thing. Lol.
Don’t think it should be banned, but any form of Overwolf slander is a +1 in my book.
All my homies hate Overwolf.
You clearly weren’t on the internet in the early 2000’s. Ads were so abusive that anyone from that era will not tolerate any ad in any form whatsoever.
I very much was, but you know what else was on the internet? Adblockers. Even as a teenager I knew how to use those.
