Literally 0 chance of this ever happening.
I bet it will.
Sadly this would really hurt a lot of the RP community.
Blizzard has 0 reason to do this. Vast majority of people donât care about curseforge versus wowup. Blizzard jumping in to just remove them all is just a ridiculous suggestion for a company with a declining user base.
Itâs weird how FFXIV doesnât have add-ons (that arenât bannable) but has more subscribers than WoW.
Weird how you compare two completely different and irrelevant scenarios and think that youâve made point.
One has add-ons, the other doesnât.
We are talking about add-ons.
FFXIV doesnât suffer for not having add-ons.
Oh so FF14 has been around since 2008 with addons, decided to ban then and nothing bad happened as a result?
Like I said, not even comparable scenarios.
Thatâs been my experience-- that black box.
Once in a while it has a small video, no sound, nothing that distracts me from the thought intensive process of clicking the install button. (This is called sarcasm.)
And thatâs been it.
yeah i dont pay for anything on curseforge and i only open it every once in awhile to check for updates on the addons i use.
Iâm actually surprised that Blizzard allows addon businesses to exist. They are making money as a result of providing a service in their IP. To me this really is no different than RMT in the game for carries, collectibles, gear, etc⊠In game everything has to be GOLD ONLY. So why are addons any different? Why are they enabled with RMT? Most of this was easier to ignore before Curse started declining API keys and trying to force a monopoly on addons. Once they get their stranglehold on all of the major devs and addons they will push even more monetization. Itâs incredibly obvious whatâs going on.
They can when the entire businesses is based on the use of their products provided they can show that it has a negative effect on their business.
Its how they shut down honorbuddy.
Yes, Blizzard can block them and their addons from working on their game. They can remove API keys etc.
They would have to spend a considerable amount of time on updating their ancient as dirt UI to even be acceptable. Not to mention a complete redesign of fight mechanics, as they have made them more and more complex to account for the use of mods. More likely they will selectively target the features of some mods to curtail them if they find them are becoming too good.
Correct. However, Overwolf is free too. We are the product?
Install Overwolf
Overwolf gathers user data
Overwolf sells user data to ad corporations
Ad corporations send ads that target each user
Some users click on those ads
clicks produce revenue
devs get a small cut of that revenue.
The fact that they take our data and are not upfront about it⊠malware. Yes, you click âI agree,â but the fact that the data collection info is buried deep in the legal jargon filled EULA instead of upfront and understandable to most people is intended deceptionâŠMalware.
Walked away from Curse as soon as OverWolf got involved.
You will have to do a re-scan with Curse disabled. Many addons are available elsewhere. I wrote up a post a week or two ago with links to a couple guides. Iâm still using WowUp.io to update my addons. There are a few I am updating manually. There is a list of addons that are available on GitHub here: https://github.com/layday/github-wow-addon-catalogue/blob/main/addons.csv
Here is my post from earlier with links to WowUp guides for finding alternative sources that can be updated through WowUp:
Iâm surprised this debacle of a thread is continuing given the release of a standalone CurseForge app. The one downside to that announcement though is that itâs Windows only at the moment. I donât believe the CurseForge app that already exists in macOS supports the v2 API. Of course I havenât had a chance to check that recently as Iâve been in the hospital for most of the last month with complications from a lung biopsy surgery, so maybe Iâll be pleasantly surprised and the old CF app for macOS got a stealth v2 API update.
So slight sidenote. The non standalone version cant be installed on Windows insider preview, the installer wont let it progress which I found odd. Not something Iâve run into before.
Standalone version works fine though for installing.
