Is it possible to uninstall the Overwolf app but keep the Curseforge app? I have zero plans of using Overwolf nor do I want it on my PC. Unfortunately I had to use this app to update my addons as the other app I was using has not been updated and did not detect updates for my addons (if that makes sense).
ie: Ajour is not updated and did not detect updates unlike Curseforge App did.
I tried looking for that option and it seems (at least to me from what I’m seeing?) that there is no such option. It looks like OW comes with Curseforge app. Ugh.
I will try it but I think I used it once before and it did something similar to Ajour in that no updates were detected or that some were detected and some were not. Thank you!
No, Curseforge is run upon the Overwolf platform. I honestly don’t understand all the fear over Overwolf, I have been using it since the start of last Nov and never had an issue with it. If don’t actively need it open (which is only if I am running warcraft logs for the raid), I close it after I update. And if you configure Cursedforge correclty, it will close Overwolf at the same time.
So, to be clear, your preference is either of the two autoupdaters that don’t actually autoupdate over the one that actually works like it’s supposed to?
I think what has people worried that Overwolf might pull a trojan horse of sorts, keeping changes on Curse minimal long enough to fall off the radar and gain user trust and then start ramping up the slime. It’s an unfortunately common strategy with apps/services that get bought out.
Also anything that runs JavaScript bundled with ads outside of the browser sandbox is a huge liability. There’s been several JS-based driveby exploits used by shady ads in the past that’ve functioned even with the browser sandbox keeping things contained, so if such an ad gets served to an app that isn’t sandboxed (like OW/Curse) it could very well end up handing over wholesale control of your machine.
It’s too bad OW/Curse isn’t a UWP/WinSDK Microsoft Store app, because those are sandboxed and have guaranteed means of full removal which would improve the situation significantly.
The Curseforge App has to run inside the Overwolf App, but it’s possible to configure it so that both apps completely shut down when you close the window.
WowUp has never had an issue finding and installing updates, and knowing exactly when they’ve updated for me. I switched to it as soon as the date of cutoff for the old twitch app was, and have had no issues, and no overwolf.
