Create a custom chat filter for players who don't want to see specific messages

TL;DR: Blizz should make a custom chat filter for those who don’t want to see boosting in trade.

Hello! I have a problem with the current social status of the game. Currently, if you want to talk to the larger community in game, Trade Chat is the way to go. The problem is that Trade Chat is shared with, well…Trade. And General is city specific. To me, that makes no sense.

My ignore list is FULL (50 people). Every single person on it is someone advertising boosting in trade chat. And I’m sure many of them are the same people on different characters. At this point, boosting is just apart of the game that we have to co-exist with, so I have a solution that will make everyone happy.

If Blizz creates a customizable chat filter, the people who don’t want to see the boosting services don’t have to. While the people who do can continue to do so. This also has the added side effect of being able to self censor certain swear words or phrases you really don’t care to see.

I believe this would be an effective and satisfying solution to Trade chat being paragraphs of boosting advertisements.

Let me know what you think!

You may not want to use add ons, but in case you dont mind, may I suggest the Global Ignore List. Until Blizzard changes the Ignore function to actually be a global one and increases ignore numbers, its probably the best option.

Bad boy addon is a great way to ignore specific key words. But yes, Blizzard should have a system in game that works for this.

Chances are Blizz isn’t going to increase the size of that list purely due to storage concerns.
The addon off loads the storage to your PC which makes way more sense than it being server side.

That’s useful. I was unaware of that issue. Does that mean it would be technologically impractical to create a custom keyword blacklist?

Thank you for the addon. I will check it out. If that solves the problem, cool. If it is a tech issue like Sleezy said, then it’s not really a problem blizz can handle too well, and an addon solves the problem seemingly perfectly. I’ll check it out, thanks!

Probably. You still come up with the same storage concerns storing every ones list for every ones different characters.
50 names doesn’t sound like much, but when you multiply that by a possible 50 characters for millions of accounts, you start talking about a serious amount of storage.

Problem with BB is I dont think its been updated in a long time. I always worry about add ons that arent updated for newer patches as I get concerned they will cause issues in the game.

I see. The global ignore list will partially fix the issue. If Bad Boy does work, and doesn’t cause any issues, I should be good. I’ll definitely give both a try.

The Global Ignore List also includes a default spam filter function for chat. It generally works fine for me without much need for tinkering. So if you get GIL you dont really need BB.

I think this already exists and there’s no reason to spend further development time on it because people are too incapable or stubborn to use addons.

most of them are throw away accounts that don’t last past a few weeks, trying to put them on ignore is like swatting roaches in a dive motel… it’s never ending.

So, I downloaded both and it seems Global is indeed superior. It has AND OR functions while it seems like BadBoy does not. In addition it has ignore notes which are pretty cool, and basically does everything I was hoping for. Thanks friend!
