Crashing on Opening Cinematic

So I just patched to 9.0.1 or whatever it is, and World of Warcraft hangs when the opening cinematic starts playing. I’m running it through WINE using Lutris as a front-end on Linux Mint 20. Warcraft Reforged and World of Warcraft Classic run flawlessly in this configuration. I checked some logs and I think the important error message is this: “[1013/105257.651:ERROR:mf_video_decoder.cc(747)] Unsupported codec by MfVideoDecoder: 6”. My graphics drivers are up to date and all that. Has anyone had success so far with this patch in WINE?

Error code 138, Fatal exception, ACCESS_VIOLATION, memory could not be “executed”.

Same issue.

Same issue here. Is there any way to disable the opening cinematic? A launch command or something?

You can skip the opening cinematic by editing Config.wtf so that it thinks it has already played the movie, to wit:

SET playIntroMovie "9"

But that won’t help. It will just crash again anyway.

I had the same issue with Lutris and Ubuntu. Installing wine-staging 5.19 fixed the issue and I’m now in the game.

(I can’t link to sites so just go to the winehq wiki for installing wineHQ packages.)

Install the staging branch. Then pick the wine-staging 5.19 in wine version under Runner Options.

@Zhagaar: Okay, thanks for the input man. I’m going to try out your fix now, and will report whether or not it solves my issue.

@Galorion I’m having the same exact issue, running lutris on Ubuntu 20.04. Please let us know if the wine staging worked at all! I’ve tried everything, and am worried I might just have to pull the trigger and build a windows gaming pc lol.

Zhagaar, thanks very much. Understanding you can’t link, can you explain in just a bit more detail?

How did you install 5.19?
You set the runner option to 5.19 within lutris itself?

Thanks in advance!

^^^ can’t find what executable to select in allllll of the files you get within the download for 5.19 on WineHQ. If anyone can provide input, plz do

Yep go to to settings and pick 5.19 Staging…

go to the wiki wine hq download page

go to Ubuntu packages (if using ubuntu or mint)

follow all instructions:

  • 32 bit architecture
  • download and add repository key
  • add repository for ubuntu 20.04
  • sudo apt update
  • install staging branch

This should install wine-staging 5.19

Then in lutris, (might need to restart lutris) right click on wow and go to configure

  • under Runner Options change wine version to WIneHQ staging 5.19

Thank you good sir!

I don’t know if it helps you guys, but I’m having the same problem on actual Windows 10.

Thanks all. Have 5.19 installed and selected as the lutris runner, and also set the intro video to 9 in the confit to skip it. Still getting the same error, although the program now makes it almost to the character loading screen.

For whatever it’s worth, retail works fine for me with lutris after the patch. Been playing it without issue for the last few hours. This is what I’m currently using:

  • Wine 5.19 staging
  • DXVK 1.7.1L
  • esync on
  • nvidia drivers at 455.28 (I had a lot of crashing using 450.66, even when playing classic)

Hey, thank you @Zhagaar; now that I’m using the WineHQ Staging 5.19 version of wine instead of the Lutris custom build, 9.0.1 runs perfectly. I’m using pretty much the same setup as @Skulky and I’m having no issues.

Thank you for this thread. WineHQ Staging 5.19 version worked like a charm for me.
