Crashing, freezing, and stuttering after 8.3 [Intel GPUs]

I appreciate the information a lot. Is there any egpu + Gcard that you recommend for wow or just amd and any egpu is functional?

THANKS

You can read the page linked below to get an idea of what is considered compatible with the Mac. It’s recent enough that it should be useful. Be aware though that if you use a Radeon 5700 class GPU in the eGPU enclosure that you will need Catalina to have acceleration with it. The Vega and prior GPUs will work in Mojave or later.

Edit: Avoid the WX cards. Those are workstation GPUs and don’t do as well in games as non-workstation GPUs. They’re designed for work that requires ECC VRAM.

I guess you didn’t know that any intel based Mac since 2006 can run windows just fine using bootcamp, and in many cases it actually runs windows better than most PC’s do… So, yes you can game on a Mac just fine.

Also, to be clear, many games support macOS, and hopefully with continued improvements to the Metal API, many more games in the future will also support macOS.

What is funny is I can run WoW @ 10/Ultra, in 5K (5120x2880), with 100% render scale just fine, and many windows PC’s can’t do that… That is typically a hardware limitation, not a just a software/os limitation, so stop with the windows vs mac argument, it is outdated thinking.

Yeah, so somehow after this new update it’s even worse on my end. Before I could force my way through a dungeon [with 2-5 separate lags of 10-15 seconds each], now about thirty seconds after I go into a dungeon I get the rainbow circle for about 5 minutes before it boots me bag to orgrimar which surprise! Also does the circle this is ridiculous

I had the BlackMagic eGPU, would have got the BlackMagic Pro eGPU if it was out when I ordered it. The reason I got it at the time, is that I use the ThunderBolt 3 UltraFine 5K monitors, and it was simple as plug and play. But you very easily can build your own eGPU at this point.

Something as simple as the Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Box 650W, or the Razer Core X (both are good if you want to install more powerful cards in later on) and I would personally recommend any of the 5700 cards, as Tia said as long as you are running Catalina.

I think the freezing problems are completely stochastic. Agreed that there is a higher probability of crash when doing slightly high graphics content. My game crashed when I was questing with my 86 shammy. Hopefully there is a fix soon.

Mac OS Version: 10.14.6
System model: MacBook Pro 13’ 2017, 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7 (Graphics card: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650 1536 MB)
Symptom: During periods of high UI activity (dungeons, quests, etc.) the game freezes while displaying the mac rainbow spinner. I will get WoW audio during this time, but the freeze does not resolve. I will have to terminate WoW and relaunch. Sometimes, the freeze is so bad the rainbow spinner does not “spin” and the macbook dies and needs a hard reboot. I do not have problems with my mac at any other time, and this only started happening after the WoW patch.

I have tried disabling all add-ons, dropping the graphics to the lowest settings, minimizing the screen, and nothing resolves the freezing. They seem to have become more frequent and longer as well.

Here is a summary of my experiences with the 8.3 patch on my MacBook Pro (2018, base model):

  • Solo content is playable, just barely. I have a lot of freezes, delays, and the occasional shutdown while questing, but I eventually get through it.
  • When fighting a rare or world boss, I’m guaranteed to freeze and crash, due to the amount of players and spell effects in the area.
  • Can’t do anything related to group content where I am counted on to do a job critical to the success of the group, like healing a Mythic+ dungeon.
  • Halls of Origination during the intro quest was so bad, that I had to log onto my wife’s Surface Pro 3 to get through it.
  • Running in Windowed mode is definitely better, fewer freezes, but they still occur. Running on graphics setting of 1 is better than the recommended 3.
  • The problem definitely got worse today following the so-called fix.

Just chiming in. Yes, running WORSE since yesterday’s patch. (Macbook Pro 13", 2019).

the moment when wow runs way better on your 8 year old windows comp then ur 4 month old MacBook :frowning: too bad the keyboard keys are broken on the pc would’ve played the game with no issue lmao

Good summary, I am experiencing the same symptoms. I, begrudgingly, canceled my account due to the lack of solution and transparency, So disappointed in Blizzard and the blues for their lack of support.

Pretty much the same deal for me now. I can do Dailies/World Quests without much issue. Joining any kind of group content where multiple players are involved I will freeze the hell out.

Mac OS version: 10.15.2
System Model: MacBook Pro 13’ 2017 2.3 dual core I5
Symptom: The screen freezing when I’m in game with sporadic sound still possible. Typically during more “chaotic” moments of the game, i.e. Horrific Visions, instances, crowded areas. But this screen freezing can happen anywhere at any moment. The rainbow wheel mouse icon appears and the game freezes. After 5-10 seconds, the game unfreezes. These freezing episodes can happen up to every minute or so in instances, making the game impossible to play. One time, in a particularly chaotic environment, the entire computer automatically shut down after the aforementioned screen freeze.

I just want to say thank you Blizzard. Thank you for releasing a patch that KNOWINGLY not only breaks the game, but potentially causes serious and irrevocable harm to your customers’ computers.

You knew this was a problem on the PTR. You knew how serious the problem was… but you released it anyway.

There’s a specific term for this. It’s called “gross negligence.” You should probably ask your legal team about the term.

I’m currently running a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt Ports) with a 3.5 GHz Duel-Core Intel Core I8.

My graphics card is a Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650. I honestly don’t know if I have a good gaming rig or not - but I have played WoW successfully on this machine for the last 6 months.

Ever since 8.3, I’m crashing and freezing every time I engage a mob (does not matter the character or difficulty of the enemy). I’ve played WoW since Naxx40 and I am trusting that Blizzard is working hard at this, because I know they don’t like their commercial audience to be so frustrated.

Hoping for a fix soon! I miss playing my favorite game!

The absolute silence of blue posts since patch last night is telling. Even an update explaining what the problem is and what they’re doing to try and rectify it, even if it’s something that might take another few days, would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear that, worked for me so I figured I’d share in case anyone had my luck. Hope you find a workaround sooner than later.

This ended up working for me also, although I still crash when there is a huge group.

I crashed earlier when I got into a raid group for a world boss. Finally put in a ticket and they advised me just like everyone else to post in this thread to see when the issue has been fixed. Took me 5-6 tries to get through the scenario for Halls of Origination with out crashing after the patch hit.
