Crash whenever switching monitor or switching to windowed mode

The game alternates between windowed and fullscreen 3 times and then crashes with this error: “world of warcraft was unable to start up 3d acceleration”

I want to run the game on my 2nd monitor and this bug is preventing that. Win+shift+left moves it there but doesn’t change the resolution so it’s 1/4th of the screen.

My drivers are up to date, I’ve disabled fullscreen optimizations, and I’ve ran the repair tool. This problem doesn’t happen on retail. It’s a WoW Classic bug exclusively.

try making sure both ur monitors are the same reso then start the game, or maybe you have override scaling mode box check marked in ur nvidia control panel if thats what you use not sure just a suggestion

check if ur override scale box is check marked under adjust desktop size and position in nvidia panel

My monitors cannot be the same resolution. It’s not a problem for other games, though (including retail.)

This usually happens when an overlay like discord’s is turned on. See if it still crashes without.

For me the crash happens when I’m fullscreen windowed on one monitor, and I switch to fullscreen windowed (different resolution) on a different monitor. It actually hard freezes my whole computer and I can’t even CTRL-ALT-DEL. Have to power cycle.

However if I go windowed first, then drag the window to the other monitor, then fullscreen, then set to fullscreen windowed on that monitor, it works.

This happens if discord, shadowplay or Game Bar (microsoft thing, on by default) is running.

Game Bar works fine for me. I’ve been using it no issues. Discord overlay did crash me though.

I am able to switch monitors using windowed full screen at different resolutions without any problems. The problem you are encountering therefore seems not due solely to wow classic, but rather a combination of wow classic and other software running on your system.

BTW, I am running nvidia video card. I do not use geforce experience/shadowplay or game bar and my game mode is off. edit I am running a ryzen 7 2700x on x370 chipset.

If WoW Classic crashes due to any overlay, the problem is still WoW Classic’s. It’s a bug.

I had the same issue. 2 monitors, same model. When I tried changing the monitor from 2 to 1 (or primary) my system would hang (with the exception of my mouse still moving).

I ended up editing my config.wtf and manually changing the “gxMonitor” to 1. WoW started up on the monitor I wanted it on just fine.

Same issue here, workaround seems to be to use windows keyboard shortcut to switch displays. (Shift + Windows Key + Left/Right Arrow) - Works for me but still crashes occasionally when I try to change from the System Menu.
