Cranky Quarantine Thread

I still regret we never got a arbitrary Troll raid in WoD.

“Dis…wuz our land.
DRAENOR TROLL land.”

I agree. Those were great.

“We’re gonna bury you here” was an awesome line. You can tell because Blizzard used it like six other times.

We really need a new world revamp if only to fix the tonal imbalance.

Trying once more to get a Hordie off the ground. Fight through Silverpine’s story of betrayal and war crimes. Enter Hillsbrad and…become a NPC handing out quests to mockeries of the player base.

I should sue Blizzard for whiplash.

De Amani never give up. We never forget. We never die.

Dis is our land. You wanna stay? You stay here forever.

We gonna bury you here.

That trailer ruled and I’ve never forgotten it OR Black Temple. Others… not so much.

I enjoyed the goofy quests way more before I realized they’re there because Blizzard didn’t want to write an actual story.

Ha ha, hey, remember how in Hillsbrad you get an actual quest to go round up human slaves and then escort the slaves to a horrific fate by dragging them on a chain and we still have the argument whether Horde is pro-slavery or not.

Good times, good times.

Hour long maintenance in the middle of the afternoon.

Rabble Rabble Rabble Rabble

I fully believe that back in vanilla a player could get the impression that the Horde was against slavery in all forms, and were champions of hope and freedom.

Unfortunately, what the horde is for or against changes back and forth drastically as the story progresses, sometimes even within the same quest chain!

(see: Saurfang hiring rogues to backstab guards but suddenly being wracked with shame for throwing his axe at Malfurion’s back.)

I mean, if that works for you, like… awesome. I’m happy for you.

But it’s stopped working for me. It’s gotten to the point where it’s so bad I can’t really overlook it anymore. I want more out of what I spend my diminished spare time on, and not even the gameplay is enough for me to turn a blind eye to how this ongoing train wreck is written.

It feels like “just pretend the story isn’t there” is a…huge downside to a role-playing game.

The common wisdom is that most players dont care about the story and just wanna kill bosses and get loot.

I guess this is blizzard putting it all on the line to test that theory.

Lets hope their gameplay is good enough to carry them!

I don’t believe that.

Like, I believe they believe it, but I don’t think most players don’t care. Because, as we’ve seen, story is inextricable from gameplay. The Horde didn’t like their questing being boiled down to “run around stealing corpses for us” and the Alliance don’t like being mistreated because they’re not the devs’ favorites.

I feel like a lot of players care about story more than they know and I think a lot of players don’t put it into the same words as we do–because, let’s face it, our long hours waging fiery war over the actions of make-believe elves has left us all with more to say about the subject than others. But I think it matters to them, still.

Anecdotal, but boy do the people on my “normal” servers (though in BfA this has mostly been Cael & Malganis/Akama) seem to care very little. Some will make fun of it or know it’s dumb, but what makes them come and go is class balance, guild drama, finishing the tier etc.

SEEM though. And that “not putting it into words“ or story being the main “pain point” can definitely distort the issue for everyone, including the devs.

Of course the current devs will actually say “some people got Sylvanas wrong,” so there’s that as well — even if it was put into words they’d be lumped together with everyone else who doesn’t “get” it.

Part of me wishes that I could just completely surrender to how bad WoW’s storytelling is and section myself off into a nice little corner where I can safely ignore it to write something that I enjoy. But it’s such a big facet of RPing in WoW specifically that there’s some common thread linking my character to everyone else- that even if we’re all concerned with different pieces of a larger picture, I can walk into a tavern and strike up a conversation with another player that doesn’t require two hours of discussion prior to make sure that our characters are “canonically” compatible on a basic level.

Because without that, I’m really not sure what the appeal of playing the game would even be for me when I could just save myself $15 a month and just do the exact same thing through raw text instead of awkwardly standing around in-game to do it. The only advantage specific to WoW RP is that it makes forming connections so much more convenient.

But if we’re all just operating on completely different realities, what’s even the point of that?

Actshually, that was just a Darkspear Troll who decided, for some bizarre reason, or maybe because Blizzard’s writing team at the time was held back by the Dungeon/Raid design team’s squirrel-grip and of course the monsters strike first for no reason in bad 80’s racist caricature style, that the Alliance who had spared his Horde were suddenly gonna pull a Scruffy-turned-Evil on them once they had a manabomb equivalent device on their hands.

I genuinely don’t know what 8.2’s lore is. I sped through it to get Pathfinder 2 and Mechagnomes. I’m also about 6k rep away from KTs. This game is just about tedious activities to get characters to level now.

But I have a plan. It will require help from literally everyone on the server, but if we pull it off, it will be grand.

Color me curious! What does this plan entail?

Currently, it’s on hold. I need to see what the lore of Shadowlands is. If most of Azeroth‘s population/military is pulled into this alternate world, the idea won’t work. If it’s just “the hero”, then it’s fine.

Once we get confirmation, I can begin writing the proposals.

That is mildly intimidating but also oddly intriguing.

So…uh…Brontosaur goldsink mount is being removed.

Yeah.

Some are stating that the AH vendor is also being removed via datamining, but that hasn’t been confirmed.
