Cranky Quarantine Thread

I believe the in universe reason why only Jedi and Sith seem to use Lightsabers is because without Force Sensitivity it’s super easy to accidentally kill yourself wielding one.

Unless youre finn

Who was swinging one around for most of tfa with only minor fan complaints

It was pretty clear by him complaining to his uncle that he wanted to go to pilot school, that he did not have formal starship piloting training.

Though i know a lot of tatooine scenes were cut… was there one of him piloting?

I wonder if maybe there was something in Rey’s backstory implying she would know her way around a starship

If memory serves theres a scene (right when they escape Jakku) where she indicates that she kinda knows her way around one but has never really flown one at least not to that degree before.

I always read it as another example of how Force Sensitive she is.

Force sensitivity does seem to give people instinctive flying skills and reflexes, at least in previous star wars trilogies.

That would also explain Luke and Anakin, to be honest.

Its stated in the original movie that luke is a good pilot because he cant shoot space cattle easily while zipping around the desert in a space plane (which is why he says it should be easy to blow up the death star because the exhaust port is the size of a space cow)

Which…makes luke the space version of a redneck that drives around and shoots road signs with his shotgun…

I was suggesting the possibility that there might be a correlation there, which I went on to even admit that it may not not be accurate or correct, but at that stage it was apparently already too late.

I also made it clear that based on my own observations, this trend is a thing that exists, but ultimately didn’t impact my perception of the cinematic. The only reason I kept going back to it was because apparently me saying that was met with backlash, which then made me want to defend and clarify what I was saying, but whatever.

Maybe it would help if I said that I don’t dislike Rey. I like her actress, and her arc with Kylo Ren was the only good thing to come out of The Last Subversion of My Expectations, but to say the writing behind her isn’t flawed would be disingenuous.

Are you talking about his “Just like shooting womp rats in beggar’s canyon” line?

I always assumed he did that from his speeder (the hovering car thing that doesnt go into space). It didn’t really imply that he did it from a spaceship, imo

I found the writing behind Rey to be less flawed than both Luke and Anakin, plus I thoroughly enjoyed The Last Jedi.

-pushes up nerd glasses- ashcully he flies a t-16 skyhopper which flies around but cant go very high

Ah ok, I guess I was a little too quick to jump down your throat on that, I apologize.

I think at this point the conversation has already kind of shifted into “what is/isn’t a mary sue” territory, and might be there for some time but I hope you don’t interpret those as personal attacks towards you.

But really, its all irellevant because weve had 6 movies and 100s of hours of tv shows directly connect piloting aptitude with force sensitivity

So

You know

Hehe I applaud your superior star wars knowledge!

If we’re accepting out-of-movie sources though I guess I have to go check the wiki and the companion books to see if Rey had ever flown a spaceship before

Force sensitivity is exactly what it sounds like. A sensitivity to the Force. It refers to the capacity to wield it- it doesn’t mean that you’re going to automatically be skilled at using it.

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m referring to. Affect Mind/Force Persuasion/etc is an advanced Force technique that she would not realistically be able to utilize without prior training.

Nothing to do with gender, at least from an in-universe perspective. It’s inexplicable though, because it’s never explored. Ever. They’re probably going to revisit this in Rise of the Skywalker, (which is an insulting title considering Luke’s characterization in TLJ) but I’m fairly confident it’s going to be a retcon.

Hey, wait a minute… inconsistent characterization, blatant retcons…

I forgive you, and greatly appreciate the sentiment.

:woman_shrugging:

I found Luke’s characterization in TLJ to be enjoyable and logical.

I dont know if its ever stated shes flown a space ship but a couple other points

*she seems to be the only scrapper on jaaku with a working speeder bike

*while searching through an entire star destroyer she knows exactly whats most valuable and what works

*while running towards the shipyard, knows where the best ship is and knows the falcon is the worst

*has complete knowledge of the falcons intermediate owners after han and knows exactly what parts theyve changed or added

Without a character looking directly at the camera and stating it, its pretty obvious shes at least been on and worked on space ships even though she’s never been off planet

The throne room fight scenes was just so good. Still miffed she didn’t join Kylo tho. Jedi Anarchists just sound fun to me.

I loved luke as well, to the point i was actively disappointed when he showed up with a hair cut and different outfit

Luke adamantly refused to believe his father was beyond redemption in spite of how villainous he was throughout the series. He was incredibly hopeful, almost to the point of foolishness, voluntarily surrendering himself to Vader in the hopes that he could convince him to change his ways.

And yet, because he “saw darkness” in Ben Solo, drew his lightsaber on him. Yes, he makes it clear it was a mistake, but hopeful, optimistic Luke would never have done that in the first place.

For all of Rian’s subversions, that would’ve been the one to actually be interesting. But nope.

And yet, here I am, disagreeing with you and thoroughly enjoying Luke in TLJ as well as TLJ as a whole.
