Cranky Quarantine Thread

My brain. It hath snapped.

What did anyone take wrong from any part of BfA, let alone Sylvanas?

While venturing through the Shadowlands, we’ll learn about the deal between her and Sylvanas, as well as the purpose of the lantern… but it might not be what fans think!

I wrote something… but it might not be what you think!

The purpose of the lantern was quite clear - subjugate the Val’kyr.

Dear Blizzard,

Thank you for confirming that all the bunk about her not being evil, just aggressive were yet another pack of lies.

More delightfully patronizing “You’re just too stupid to understand the grand design.” hangwringing.

I shudder at the amount of unwashed sylvanas body pillows the devs seem to have.

Is it just me or is the cadence of those answers eerily like a Trump speech? They’ve got that rambling, stream of consciousness, low vocabulary quality.

We literally got an explanation as to what the lantern does.

We stopped her in the middle of trying to use it.

No backwards assss retconning assss make it up on the fly sitshow logic undoes all the things we were doing at the time, the best case scenario this moron is trying to convey is that UhM ActUalLy Sylvanas had a reason to enslave large ghost lady and also send literal children to literal superhelljail.

Like FK right off.

“There’s nothing about what’s happening now that requires Battle for Azeroth. Remove Sargeras stabbing the planet and jump straight to Shadowlands, and the plot still lines up just fine. “Oh, Sylvanas needed to create more deaths.” The Burning Legion was invading; I’m pretty sure there were plenty of deaths during that particular occasion. Even if it’s not actually a retcon, it sure feels like one.”

BlizzCon 2020, they show a slide of a graphic representation of Night Elf children being tortured in unimaginable ways, just barely skirting ending up on Federal watchdog lists.

" It’s even worse when you consider the fact that literally every single expansion has featured at least one major story arc about putting aside factional differences and uniting to take down a common foe. For all this talk of the faction war being a pillar of the game, it really isn’t. It’s the justification for PvP and having a handful of different storylines in an expansion that largely follows the same beats every time. Remember how the Alliance and the Horde had one slightly different opening in Stormheim and then basically ceased being distinct entities for the remainder of the expansion?

Oh, and let’s not forget that the designers will happily knock away any and all other pillars the moment it feels momentarily convenient. So that isn’t even an authentic justification."

From the articke above"

Mercenary Mode already exists because queue times were becoming unsustainable, at least as far as their satisfaction / business was concerned.

So it’s not even a justification for PvP either.

I’m really bored of the faction conflict. I’m bored of fighting gods. I want something on the home front again. I miss Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms a lot.

I wonder if they added like a “scale accurate” version of the continents as an update. Like, same zones, but more additions? I don’t know, just spitballing. I felt like the environments had so much variety, and they were so brightly colored.

And I would go back to classic… but all the retail QoL changes would be gone.

I just want to be able to group with/interact with anyone I come across, regardless of faction. It’s been 15 godd*mn years.

This constant warfare is going to bring about extinction.

Turns out when you split your production team into A Team Expansion and B Team Expansion, you get a consistently terrible product in the off-season while your true creative efforts go to the expansion that comes after - still maintaining the time requirement of 1-2 years between expansions so your investors are happy, but your consumers ain’t.

Who knew.

Eh, maybe Sylvanas did need to start the war because the Maw wasn’t taking all the souls until after Legion ended? Like maybe the Shadowlands was working as intended until sometime between Legion and BfA which is why she needed to start the war?

I don’t know, we don’t know the exact time the Maw started sucking up all the souls.

It will be whatever means they have to expend the least amount of effort in maintaining a coherent product because they are making this up as they go.

I think the articles point is that were you to completely remove BfA and clain the Legion sufficiently powered the Maw it would be more than acceptable.

BfA feels like it was completely pointless

That’s fair… Actually when you think about it, they could have legitimately done that and replaced BfA with an actual South Seas expansion where we just relax for an expansion, and rebuild (I just want Gilneas back dang it.) and then Shadowlnads happens afterwards.

Yup.

BfA was completely meaningless. Without some tangible change to the faction dynamic that we can actually feel in game this entire expansion had no purpose.

The point at which The Maw started eating all of the souls is entirely arbitrary. For all we know, Blizzard could say that it’s been that way since Sylvanas first struck this deal with ~the Jailer~ (I really hate these names) all the way back during her Edge of Night story and it would carry the exact same amount of narrative weight as it did for the beginning of Battle for Azeroth.

That is to say, none.

True, but having start taking all the souls prior to Battle for Azeroth makes more sense lore-wise and requires way less retcons. They could say the Jailer and Sylvanas began planning after Edge of Night, this is still a retcon…, however the Maw did not start sucking up all souls until right before BfA.

I think this is what they are going for, but they haven’t specified exactly when it happened. It would be depressing as hell if all the Gilneans Sylvanas killed when she attacked Gilneas were now suffering eternal torment…
