Whenever I try to craft an order and hit the “Start Order” button, it just sits there and does nothing, and then my characters lag out and can’t interact with anything at all in the world. I tried it on multiple characters with the same effect. All is well until I hit that “Start Order” button.

Massive server side lag. Happening to me too 
I can’t even cast spells/abilities. At least I can move around and I see other players moving around…

It also fails from the other end if you try to craft stuff. I already went to Valdrakken, it is less buggy there.

I tried Dorn, Val, and the Fyrakk assault crafting tables. All exhibit the same thing.

Also, simply getting to this page from the list of bugs took ~ 20 seconds.
Looks like Blizz is have some network issues, could be a DDoS?
Can confirm, happening to me as well.
Even in Valdrakken, click on crafting table twice and your character is virtually offline (client does not close but disconnected).
I had the original issue with trying to do crafting orders bugging stuff out. I disabled the cooldown manager entirely, relogged, and it resolved itself.
