CPU+GPU Question help..?

Hey All, I know people here are insanely more tech savvy then myself, with the RTX 3080/3090 releasing soon I was thinking of upgrading my GPU…

I’m currently using a Ryzen Threadripper 1950x + 1080TI sli with 32GB RAM.

can my CPU use the 3080/3090 for gaming fine? I’m currently on a 2k monitor aswell that can get 144hz and boost too 165hz…

I have no idea when I bought my PC I literally just said give me the best, I just wanna make sure I can run Shadowlands, Cyberpunk and Outriders flawlessly all maxed out…

When I went back to the PC Guy, he said I should buy a new tower with an Intel i9, for the new cards, but that will cost me $6000AUD… which is a lot… I even said maybe just replace CPU and GPU and he kept pushing for a whole new tower…

So I need help, cause money isn’t the issue but I think he just wants to take me to the bank…

Any feedback is much…much appreciated!..

What you’re currently running will run Shadowlands more than fine.

That cpu is fine. If you want 10% more fps then feel free to upgrade, but just upgrading your gpu is enough.

Your rig is okay as is. You don’t need to upgrade anything.

1080Ti SLI is plenty.
Threadripper CPU is overkill.

You won’t need to upgrade for another 4 years.

Thank you all for such a quick reply, so realistically all I need to do is just buy the 3080 and I’ll be fine?, cause I’ve been told the 3080 is stronger then my 1080ti sli.

We don’t know exactly how fast it is yet, but it’s looking faster than a 1080ti based on Nvidia’s statements, yeah.

You’ll want a 3000 series for the raytracing and dlss for future games.

1950x is going to bottleneck you in most cases in gaming even compared to a Ryzen 3 3100.

It’s not designed for gaming and is 1st gen Zen, which is slightly slower than Haswell IPC.

At 1440p or lower, you will bottleneck a 3070 for sure in most games, let alone 3080 or 3090.

4k possibly you may not bottleneck a 3070.

My goal is aslong as I get 100fps+ on Shadowlands, Cyberpunk, outriders all maxed out on 2k I’ll be happy, but if I have to get a 4k monitor I will if it makes me get more FPS.

I wouldn’t get more than a 3070 unless you plan on upgrading your cpu at 1440p (2k).

Your cpu won’t push enough fps for 3080/3090 to make the cost worth it.

Check benchmarks for 2080ti and 1st gen ryzen CPUs, like 1600x/1800x. That will tell you comparatively where the cpu bottleneck starts.

Going to 4k won’t give you more fps, it’s just that the cpu limitation is less apparent.

So with my current set up and if I get 3080 I won’t get 100fps maxed out you think on 2k?

Depends on game but if you can only get say 100fps max regardless of gpu, why spend $700 on the 3080 if the 3070 can do it as well for $500

See here:

Most games can’t take advantage of more than 8 cores and 16 threads. In gaming, the extra cores of your 1950x don’t help.

The closest comparison on your cpu would be the 1700x/1800x.

This shows the 2600x vs 3600x, and there’s a drop-off where stronger gpus don’t help. Even at 1440p, there’s almost no gain for the 2600x going from the 2070 super to the 2080 ti. And the 2600x is faster than your 1950x. So the 3080 and 3090 being even faster only makes the cpu disparity even more obvious.

With a 2080ti, which is supposedly the same performance as the 3070, you already get capped in fps with a 1700x/1800x sooner than on the 3700x.

These results here represent a cpu bottleneck.

By buying a gpu stronger than a 2080ti (3070), you aren’t going to get the benefit of the extra you horsepower unless you upgrade your cpu.

Ok ok thank you, I’ll be looking into a new cpu aswell, thank you all for your responses.

I’ll look into the i9 cpu aswell then

Unless you want to take advantage of Ray Tracing, then a 2070 might be a reasonable upgrade, or hold off for a 3070.

Or save a few hundred bucks and get an I 7 , which should be good for at least a few years.

3070 would make sense since it actually has competent RTX and DLSS.

Yeah, that’s fair.

May as well wait a week for the 30XX cards at that point. Replace the 1080Ti’s with a single 3090. Then sell the 1080Ti’s.

Does WoW even support SLI?

Not trying to be mean, but the whole system seems like the OP got upsold by some salesman.

You’d have got better performance out of a 7700k and a single 1080ti for half the price in that era.

UNLESS you use it for work, in which case you can just tell me to shut up.

I’m not sure, but like I said I wanna make sure Cyberpunk 2077 and Outriders play flawlessly maxed out, aswell as Shadowlands.
