Hello ladies and gents, I’m not very computer savvy per se and I have a question about whether I should upgrade my i5 4590 3.3ghz to an i7 4790k 4ghz Devils Canyon.
The computer is approx. 6 years old.
Currently have a gtx 1070 (msi) as a gpu 8gb ddr3.
I want to get this computer ready for shadowlands, but not sure if the upgrade would be worth it or not.
Depends on what you’re paying for the 4790k, because I don’t think it’s going to make that much difference. If it’s super cheap and you know you’re not going to do a more substantial upgrade (changing CPU generations) any time soon it might make sense.
On eBay, 4790K’s are going for around ~$200 which is way more than I’d pay. At that price you’d be better served by putting that cash toward a new PC fund.
4790k with an OC (presuming you have a Z board) is still adequate for today and will give you an uplift in many games that need threads. WoW gets a small increase with the last round of multi-threading optimizations.
HOWEVER, they’re usually stupid expensive. Your best solution is to upgrade my motherboard, CPU, and RAM.
A 4790k is like $200-300.
Alternatively, you can get a Ryzen 5 3600 ($180), a B450 Motherboard ($100), and 16gb kit of 3200mhz ram for around $70. Grand total about $350 but you get 6 cores and more modern features such as m.2 NVME capability and DDR4.
Would second this. The jump in performance from 4590 → 3600 is going to be colossal, I have a friend who did a similar upgrade recently and he’s extremely happy with the result. Even games that the old CPU handled alright run with far more stable framerates after the upgrade.
