I crashed during an arena game was really frustrating and I noticed it said my CPU was overheating when it restarted. I did some fixes in bios and increased the fan speed for my CPU and enabled XMP-profile to. It’s an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6 - Core processor. I had problems with it when I first got and built this computer and I happened to damage it while taking it apart again to see if the fan was not seated right(Fan stuck to the AMD processor and ripped it out causing a pin to fall off and bending a few… I took it into a repair guy and he was able to fix it for the most part). Anyways its hovering between 70-80 C with precision boost and overdrive. Just wondering if 70-80 C is good for the temp under load (had a lot of stuff in the background open FB, Spotify, Youtube)?
Seems to have calmed down I’ll post an update if it crashes again. I can’t really unhook it or its done, but I’m already planning to buy a new processor+fan in the near future as the newer stuff looks pretty sweet the AMD 5000 series…
I would say that 70-80 is definitely on the warm side for a 3600. What kind of CPU cooler are you using?
Stock cooler. I just got back on today and it says its around 60C well downloading games… I guess I should add I never bought case fans as the case/tower I had, had fans… 2 One on the top and one at the back. Maybe I should invest in more case fans?
Ahh yeah, the cooler bundled with the 3600 isn’t great. It’ll do the job technically, but it’s going to start to buckle under heavy load and especially with PBO on. Personally, I would only recommend using it in an office PC.
Your case fan configuration sounds kind of odd too — if I’m understanding correctly, you have all intake fans at the top? If at all possible, you want your intake to be parallel with your exhaust so the air is all moving in the same direction and reliably removing heat, instead of bouncing around in the case until it eventually finds its way over to the exhaust fan. Did you configure your case this way because of a solid front panel?
So my recommendation would be to invest a little bit in a better cooler, which is probably going to be what’ll make the biggest difference. Which cooler exactly depends on what your case can accommodate, but the Scythe Mugen 5 has excellent bang for buck and should reduce temperatures significantly — if you read the reviews on that page, it brought someone else’s 3600 down to 40°C idle and 65°C full load. If you’re alright with spending a little more, there’s the also the gigantic, high end king of air coolers, Noctua’s NH-D15. The latter is overkill for a 3600, but since you’re running AM4 and could upgrade to a higher end (and hotter) Ryzen 3000/5000 at some point, it would give you the cooling headroom to do so. Both will be MUCH more quiet than the stock cooler.
Someone else posted a similar issue, prob caused by the missing cpu pin.

Sorry there is one case fan at the back, very close to the processor. I think the other one is actually at the front. I was looking at the Noctua NH-D15, and ya I upgraded my bios on my MSI MAG B550M BAZOOKA Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard so I’m all set for the new 5000 when I decide to get one. I’m just more so or less worried I’ll damage the processor again when I decide to take it off again, that’s why I want to make sure I have funds for a new processor + fan. The tower is [Phanteks Enthoo Pro ATX Full Tower Case]. I guess I can turn off PBO see if it helps? I read that 70-80C is pretty normal under load with the stock cooler, but ya it reset during that arena game so that was no fun… lol XD
This sucks, but it’s a great excuse to upgrade to a 5600x (presuming your motherboard supports it, if it’s not an OEM one).

My thoughts exactly, I wonder if the missing pin is also causing it to restart? It really seems to have calmed down since I did some bios stuff… I mean I feel like I’ve been dealing with this long enough to say I got use out of my 3600x… Not to mention I was happy to learn so much and still learning from my first build. It only happens max 3 times in one day. Yesterday it crashed once and it hasn’t since. Ever since turning on PBO and increasing fan speed. Still curious if the missing pin is also causing a problem. I’ll probably have a new processor and a noctua fan in the future
Just be more careful this time!
