CPU help needed!

Hi there,

I know WoW is heavily dependent on the CPU clock speed. I wonder if the CPU base clock or the turbo clock is more important in gaining more FPS?

Lets say there are three CPUs available:
1.) a CPU with base clock of 1.5 MHz and 4.4 MHz turbo clock (like the i3-1220p)
2.) a CPU with base clock of 3.0 MHz and 4.1 MHz turbo clock (like the i3-1115G4)
3.) a CPU with base clock of 2.8 MHz and 4.3 MHz turbo clock (like the Ryzen 5 7520U)

Lets say all other specs are identical in my new notebook. Which one will produce the most FPS in WoW?

my laptop has a i5 103G1 cpu 1.20ghz 3.40ish . the higher the clock speed (and more ram)the more Performance you can get <about 20fps difference> and depends what power options you are on — Balanced (recommended) - High Performance or Ultimate Performance —

clockspeed is not a particularly useful metric to evaluate a processor. warcraft is heavily dependent on the speed of a single core, vs the speed of multiple cores combined. but you can’t just compare one clock speed on one cpu to another, there is more to performance than just that clock speed, so you can only compare that if they otherwise have similar architecture. so unless you want to figure that out, just look at benchmarks. how well it handles multicore performance shouldn’t be ignored, though.

here’s a table showing laptop single core speeds, higher is better - i pasted those cpu’s below. the laptop itself can impact how the cpu performs too - for example how well the laptop handles heat can impact how much of and how long it can sustain that turbo clock speed before it throttles due to heat. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html#laptop-thread

Intel Core i3-1220P -3,437
Intel Core i3-1115G4 -2,669
AMD Ryzen 5 7520U -2,579

are intels really that much better than the ryzens, or does amd get better with the newer ones (7 or 9)? i’m truly interested because old nelly’s needing a replacement after 11yrs.

generally speaking ryzens have comparable offerings to intel at every performance point these days. for lower to mid-range performance, ryzen is often a better buy. above that intel and ryzen both have good offerings. i haven’t really looked at cpu value between the two in a bit though.

High base clock would be the best

As i just posted above, the highest performing cpu of the ones he listed is the one with the lowest base clock. so yes, if you are using a laptop that is always throttling it down to base, then higher base clock would be preferred. but picking a slower cpu because it would be faster in situations that don’t exist in real life is not a good move. benchmarks and reviews are necessary here.
