Team Red might give you a driver crash and Team blue might burn your house down, so pick your poison. Last I heard, people are turning their thermostats down and canceling their heating oil deliveries since their Nvidia cards literally double as a furnace these days
Errr, a quick search shows that the rtx 4000 GPUs are by far the most power efficient of all consumer GPUs. . .
depends on the exact card, flagship wise they are not efficient but that goes with the top end cards regardless of Nvidia or AMD. The mid level cards like the RTX 4060/ti are extremely efficient.
Errr, you may want to try reading on some Nvidia news thatās actually, you know, current.
Anyone know if the 9070 will be hard to get your hands on during release and so on?
If you expect to get MSRP, then yeah theyāll be difficult to get. Rumored MSRP is $850. Good luck getting one at that price.
The performance level of the 9070 is supposed to be around the 7900xt. Current pricing on the 7900xt is about $1,000 US.
Iād just get a 7700 or 7800 xt and call it a day. Theyāre actually obtainable and not outrageously expensive.
9800x3D is pretty much your best option.
Why? you dont need Superfast Ram with it. WoW is HIGHLY latency sensitive when it comes to FPS at Max Settings in highly populated areas. AKA Raids, World Events, City Hubs ect ect. This is where the large X3D V-Cache comes in to save the day. This is also why many people have great FPS but their FPS tank in world events or city hubs like Dorn or Valdraken from last xpax.
With the 9800x3D you are golden with 6000mhz Ram Kit. However with a 14700k or 14900k you will need a 7400mhz+ kit to compare to the 9800x3D and event then you still wont beat it but you will be close enough that you wont notice a diff unless you have an FPS meter turned on
As for GPU any decent mid range GPU will be fine. WoW is a CPU based game and CPU and Ram choice will have the biggest effect on your experience in Game event at 4k
Where are you getting that info about the RAM? Iāve not seen that anywhere and I have a 14700k and was about to pull the trigger on changing my motherboard and CPU to a B650 and 9800X3D because despite my 4070 ti super Iām only getting 90fps in Dorn and dipping to 100 in m+ at times. I have 6000mhz cl30 RAM and never read anywhere that increasing that to 7000+ would help wow. Iām not disagreeing Iād just love to know before I spend $1200 on a CPU and mobo if I could get away with $250 RAM.
As an aside, anyone reckon upgrading from a 14700k to a 9800X3D is worth it when I play at 1440p?
$400 budget for bothā¦more of a maximize settings than max settings post
WoW benefits from a reduction of core misses and latency, so do many games but WoW engine really likes it. Not a whole lot of professional reviews out there for the engine but sites like PCGH have tested WoWās fairly recent expansions, techspot/HUB has done breakdown tests on engines and RAM 's impact and there was a guy on youtube (harnumbers) who did some fairly good timing and frequency tests on WoW. They all back up what Swifty said about Intel and better frequency/timing ram with WoW plus he tinkers a lot so his feed back is always welcome and tends to be on point (I donāt read all of it ) from what Iāve also witnessed and read.
itās a top dog CPU and the WoW engine loves it but the RTX 4070ti will hold it back some especially if you are playing at 1440p & 144hz. I would go with the better RAM kit if it was me. Even if you donāt like the results 100%, you can carry over the kit to the new AMD build.
Personal Knowledge. Been building Gaming PCs since the 90s. Its also something not discussed a lot because its more crucial in a CPU Based game like WoW. There are only a handful of CPU Games around. With WoW Like Lilybug Saidā¦
Thats short Simple short answer. To go into more detail in General Ram Speed matters less on a X3D CPU. Why? the large 3D V-Cache acts as a large, fast memory buffer, effectively minimizing the need to access slower system RAM. Also the X3D CPU can store more data which is readily available within its own cache, negating the need for super fast system RAM.
WoW unlike most Games is a CPU based Game. There are a handful of CPU based games out there. So in a Game like wow you will have amazing FPS on any modern rig. However in world events or raids where you have a ton of people in 1 spot and lots of AOE going off you will experience Jitters. This is NOT lag. Its CPU Jitters. Its Your CPU trying to relay and store information across your RAM. On an X3D CPU this is less of an issue because its handled by the Large CPU cache as I explained above. Reducing your latency reduces the āCPU Jittersā to a point where you dont notice it at all
So there are levels of Importance when selecting PC Parts if you are wanting the Best Gaming Experience in Games at 1440p or 4k.
Most Games
GPU>Ram Speed>CPU
CPU Based Game like WoW
CPU>RAM Speed>GPU
With all of this said I did extensive testing on the RAM speed issue in wow back in Dragonflight. I had 2 identical rigs comparing the 14900k with the 7950x3D. Same GPU (RTX 4090), Same PSU, Same CPU cooler and Motherboard. The X3D PC had the RoG Strix x670e Gaming-E mobo and the 14900k had the RoG Strix Z790 Gaming-E mobo. My brother got the 14900k build and I kept the 7950x3D Build
Valdraken during the DF xpax was the best place to Benchmark. This was at prime time I was on both rigs at the same time and both characters were standing right next to each other. Both Rigs had the same 7400mhz G.skill Ram kit. I had to run the kit at max speed on the 14900k to even come close to the 7950x3D. The 7950x3D was running at 6000mhz.

Both the FPS and 1% Lows were better on the x3D CPU even though its Ram speed was slower.
just to add to what swifty said and what I sometimes see posted, oh so if CPU 1 from brand XYZ benefits from this so should CPU 2 from brand ABC. Itās two different architectures, two different pipelines, but the name of the game is reducing latency & core misses and sometimes Intel/AMD do a good job at it and sometimes they do notā¦
God thatās a good post. I feel like I do well if I can retain 10 - 15% of the knowledge you guys share

See my detailed post above.
You could always buy a 7400mhz kit (id recommend a G.skill ram kit) from a place with a good return Policy like amazon. Try it and see if you are happy with it. If not return it and then consider an upgrade. With Ram Speed increase you will notice the biggest difference in City Hubs like Dorn, World Events and Raids. Places with a lot of people in 1 spot.
If you go this route just make sure the kit you buy is on your motherboards QVL list. If you swap to AMD make sure the 6000mhz kit you buy is an AMD Expo Kit
Thanks so much for the in depth response youāve helped me understand. I reckon Iām still going to get the new motherboard and 9800X3D, while itās more expensive I also hear the chip runs cooler than my 14700k which just pumps out heat next to me, plus then I donāt have to stress about the CPU killing itself (I updated the bios etc but itās still a concern). If I got 7600MHz RAM and then still had to change to the AMD chip that money is wasted coz I canāt realistically run it more than 6000MHz on the AMD system but would have higher latency (lowest I could find on a high speed kit was CL36 whereas my current 6000MHz kit is CL30). Plus, while I donāt think the gain would be huge for the other games I play - Marvel Rivals, Helldivers 2, Space Marine 2, Hogwarts Legacy and Cyberpunk - it would still be a decent uplift even at 1440p 144hz, whereas the difference with the RAM wouldnāt be as pronounced, correct? My main game is WoW though, and I can sell my Intel board and cpu only at a slight loss luckily.
Oh, and would just removing Intel chip set drivers be enough when changing CPU or do I have to do a fresh Windows install
Yeah that one is really great with the in depth stuff. He usually takes time to explain why exactly heās telling you what heās telling you. Just an invaluable resource for us here really. I donāt know why he doesnāt have green text here 'cause he definitely should. Between him and Lily, I can always get the info I need
Id HIGHLY recommend a fresh install. 9800x3D is a solid investment. Especially since we already know Zen6 will be AM5.
If you do swap to AM5 id recommend this Expo Kit.

I love that board and wish Iād invested a little more to get it. I have the Gigabyte X 670 Gaming X AX V2 (could it have a longer name good god) and itās solid, but I still wish I had gotten the RoG
