CPU Fan Makes Grinding Noise on Startup/Load

Whenever my Intel i7-7700 CPU is put under load or boots up, the fan will make a loud grinding noise for a couple minutes and then smooth out. The CPU is brand-new and I just installed it. I checked and the fan wires were not in the way. In fact, as far as I can see, nothing is in the way of the fans at all, so I’m not sure what it could be. The fan looks a little wobbly, but I might just be imagining that.

I know my motherboard (MSI z170A pro) is compatible, because I updated the bios and it boots just fine (it had a blue screen a few minutes ago but booted normally after that).

Here is what it sounds like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cF2VpufA-Ow

Edit: That could just be how the stock cooler works, I upgraded from an i3 which was practically silent all the time, so I might just not be used to it.

Seems consistent with intel OEM coolers. They are very loud. Check your BIOS to see what your fan profile is; it sounds like it’s going full power right off the bat.

There’s still an unpleasant bur in there too, something is probably wrong with the cooler. Bad bearing or slightly mishappen blade.

Your best bet, IMO, is to just replace the thing. Its a locked CPU, so you dont need to go overboard. A Hyper 212 EVO or the new Evo Black edition would be fine, or a Cryorig H7 (all are in the 25-35 range depending on sales).

Theyll more than keep it cool, and are easy to install.

Yeah, I think they might be running at full blast. I monitored my temperatures while I played Overwatch, and the CPU averaged around 57 C and peaked at 74. Can I lower the fan speed without compromising effective life of the CPU?

Honestly I’d just follow kagthuls advice and get a cheap 120mm air cooler.

It will be much quieter and work better

I took a look at the options they listed and they seem way too big for my preferences. I think I may just experiment with lower fan speeds since I definitely have some wiggle room there before things start to get bad.

Edit: The CPU fan was definitely not at max, which was around 3000 (and a lot louder). So I may try and get an aftermarket cooler. I guess the reason why my i3 was so quiet was because it drew a lot less power so needed less fanning.

Take a look at the Gammaxx 400, I did an installation video seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVtiMvr_CBc

Not sure i get the “big for my preferrences” comment, really.

You certainly aren’t concerned with looks (or you’d never have stuck with an Intel stock cooler)… so what does it’s size matter? (Not that the H7 or Evo Black are ugly).

I can tell you I have experience with the cryorig H7 QL on two setups, and at stock CPU settings you aren’t really going to hear it over your GPU fan

My friends with i7’s and stock coolers replaced them with 120mm fan coolers loved it. Just make sure your case can handle the height since they are allot larger then stock.

Also a good time to check your pc case and see if you can fit a 120mm or 2 in the front to help with air flow.

Oh usually when first booting up the fans do go on high speed making noise but should go quiet after that initial start up.

That’s a lot noisier than any stock Intel cooler I’ve used. If yours keeps it cool enough, consider an inexpensive single fan heat pipe cooler, Mine was about $30, and was quiet, and worked almost as well as my current AIO water cooler.
