Covenant Mail Armor design

I don’t know who needs to hear this; but, whoever is designing Mail armor looks like he spends too much time looking at electrical outlets. Am I wrong or can we never see a mail set that is unique and doesn’t look cobbled together that looks good? It’s like the same inspiration drawn upon for 16 years. Stop it.

I’m really disappointed. Since vanilla, I can’t recall one mail armor set that looks unique and you’re proud to achieve “that look”. It’s very underwhelming and quite honestly straight garbage. I can pull from each set (except the Fae), that looks identical to every set before it.

Plate, leather, and cloth all seem to have something interesting going on. Wings, circlet, or offset hook/horns. Whoever working on this design must hate their job or mail users. I’d love to let the wheels fall off and really say what I think; but, there is no way they got done with those sets and feel confident about how that all turned out. Fix it.

All of those back attachments are available to any armor type.

Also, what are you even saying? These are some of the best mail sets we’ve had in a long time!

I get the mail hate normally, but seriously? For SL? The mail sets look amazing.

Night Fae and Venthyr look incredible. The other two are perfectly fine.
Have you seen the Maw Mail set? Possibly the best set in the whole game.

Personally I think leather has gotten the worst sets. Their Covenant sets are so bland.

Amazing sets. The Torghast set alone convinced me to actually touch a Hunter for the first time in like 4 years.

I said what I said, outside of the Fae set, the rest are uninspired garbage from previous sets. Pretty sure the helmet throws off the set.

Necro and Kyrian have 0 unique design and leaves you feeling like there was so much more potential looking at the other sets. Ooooh boy, that Venthyr set… awful. The disappointment is palatable.

I disagree.

Lol no.

Maybe it’s not that the set is bad… but you just like the Night Fae set more…

Heck I’ll admit I prefer the Necrolord plate set over, say, the Venthyr set. Does that mean it’s “uninspired” or “awful?” No. I just like the other ones better.

So… maybe choose Night Fae?

Depends on if we are pigeon holed into what the abilities flesh out to be. If there is an ability tied to a raid mechanic or mythic+, unfortunately won’t be able to “choose”.

Blizz - We need some mail armor for SL.

Dev - I know what that looks like.

While on one hand I wish we would get more armor that looks more in line with actual Mail I also think there have been a few good looking sets in Shadowlands. They don’t scream “Mail” to me, but they look visually fine.

Honestly, I am still a bit bummed that Plate gets so many of the actual mail textures (Chain Mail Especially) in general in WoW. In fact I even made a thread on it in the Transmog forums a while back comparing “Mail” with “Plate” in terms of armor with actual Mail textures.

I am not here to argue if the Mail armor we are getting looks good or not, but I will strongly argue it looks very little like “Mail Armor” and when we do get Mail Armor its almost always Scale Mail.

Like, for instance, can you point out where the Mail is on the Necrolord armor? The “Mail” aspect of the armor always feels so minimal and when we do get actual “mail” its far and few between with most those Mail textures going to Plate Armor.

Again, not saying the Shadowlands armor looks bad, just does not scream “Mail” to me. It always feels like its the left over scraps of Leather and Plate.

Well, that’s just it. Mail in WoW hasn’t really ever been like chainmail completely. Even back in vanilla hunters were walking around in dragon-like plate while shamans were adorned with sharp-edged plates.

As someone who’s really into art, in general, it’s really hard to make Mail interesting without slapping some plates and other things on it.

There have only been a few good mail sets, the Trial of Valor set from Legion actually looks good, especially if you replace the helm.

Like this guy.

also doesn’t help that we’ve only seen the armor sets on the ugly human model

Raiding hunter will almost certainly be vampires, and if you also mythic plus at a decent level you’ll want to be necrolord.

That is because the armor sets are always designed specifically on Human models and then are stretched/squished and resized on other models. The Male Human models are what the sets naturally look like and the base template they are designed for. So that is why Wowhead and other places always show the sets off on Human models.

Odd, because we’re are (or have been) moving into greek/norse style story telling. There is a plethora of examples even from Japan to England of chainmail. The helmet design is usually the worst. Either look like field goal posts to kick a ball through or a forked hoe used for gardening.

Even if they used some animal styled looks and implemented some mail design. Something. They literally strapped a black on black generic look with a tombstone attached to it. If I had my wish I would look at japanese samurai armor, it’s light armor that looks cool.
