To an extent, there already is no point to death in Wow. You already come back to life via a spirit healer (Kyrian), and I get that it’s for game play reasons, so no need to @ me; still applies though.
Death in Wow has also already proven that it’s not the end-all for someone. Taking the entire Shadowlands into consideration, death knights, the forsaken…death doesn’t mean “the end” anymore.
The covenant races are a possibility for potential allies. Sure, they may not “make sense” to some, given the story of Shadowlands isn’t finished and still on-going, but that doesn’t rule out their chances simply because the story isn’t finished. Some of the models are already equiped to wear player gear as wowhead has shown.

I’m a little bummed there was no announcement for the covenants becoming playable in the future. Hopefully they will later as we move towards the end of the expansion.

I’m a little disheartened that no customizations at all were announced, even for existing races. The Nightborne and Lightforged are in dire need of it. Are their design teams seriously only working on mounts and armor?.. The stuff looked great, but seriously that’s all they’re doing? Bit boring…

If they up and decided that they’re not even adding more customizations for the races we already have until probably next expansion after ignoring years of feedback, then I think the chances of Covenant races becoming playable are lower than ever, which is saying a lot since they were pretty low to begin with.
Agreed. The races who definitely should’ve received more customizations got a slap in the face. Especially since those were a selling feature of Shadowlands.

I’m surprised there aren’t any additional customizations planned for this expansion. The options of some races are desperately lacking in comparison to others.

So it’s been revealed that Kyrians will now be able to keep their memories, which could help explain why they would choose a faction if they become a neutral playable race.
Also with the latest Ardenweald reveal, Shandris Feathermoon says to Tyrande “The Winter Queen spoke of a purpose for the souls of our people. What did she mean?” I don’t know the answer, but perhaps reincarnation as Sylvar who return to Azeroth?!?! Maybe? Please! 
Given how blizz has pretty much given up on customization for the existing races I don’t have high hopes at all.
I really wish to be wrong, though. I would love the covenant races to death
