Could WoW players function without addons?

An old question but it should be brought up now and then. Does anyone think the community could function without addons save what Blizzard gives to you? I will not count Discord( or the olden days of vent and teamspeak) even though it is an addon because it does give you an advantage over those who do not use it.

I for one doubt it especially with mythic raiding. I think the game would be better and more interesting if they took away addons, and the adventure journal(huge mistake by blizzard), especially weakauras most of all. But that is just me.

As an altoholic, not having the Altoholic addon and SavedInstances addon will be painful.

Could I drive a car with manual transmission, no AC, missing doors and the smell of dead animal coming from the seats? Yes.
Would I? No.

Sure but that is partially because Blizzard designs Mythic around an organized group of 20 players in voice comms with addons to help them do things like synchronize their defensive CDs or align debuffs that are going out.

Posted this in another thread, but yea the consequence of getting rid of stuff like DBM/WeakAuras means that player skill will come down because a lot of this stuff just can’t be done without those addons. Blizz has said they take that stuff into account when designing. So the training wheels coming off is gonna be painful…

BUT the development will also come down as a result. I think it’s a bit of a reset because you’re asking people to give up their crutches, so you have to give us content that we can actually beat. It gives them a lot more development space.

It’s a win win and should happen.

I would still play but I wouldn’t enjoy the game as much.

I am aware of that. I never used them though. I am going addon free and will refuse to use them from now on as well.

I require add-ons to play. The native UI isn’t adequate to accommodate my needs, and I need auditory ques where visuals are hard to see. The disability modes for WoW are laughably bare-bones, but WA has had my back for years.

that’s good for you but to ask blizzard to nuke addons and adventure journal is not the way
the adventure journal lets tanks know when to tank swap and what to do without looking at guides on youtube.

Or they could learn by trial and error, just saying. Heh imagine if they took away voice chat as well and you had to type or macro everything during a boss fight. I remember doing that.

It’s a moot point because you can’t remove them now. It’s a nearly 20 year old game and it’s had at least some add ons since day one practically.

It’s been two decades of guilds requiring certain addons and blizz design considerations being aware of certain addons. In short addons are just part of playing the game now.

The revolt would literally be a stab in the heart of the game.

The best strategy a dev can do if they don’t want addons in their game…never allow them to begin with.

It’s a lot easier to deal with not having something than to have it for a while and it’s taken away.

You have the option to use the same addons everyone else does. You just chose not to.

And yes, I could survive without addons.

Yes but that is unfair to the people who do not want to use it or know how to use an addon. Even discord is hard for some people to figure out.

I’d say that then they can learn the mechanics through the adventure guide, but you also want it gone.

It’s 2023 and this is a 20 year old game.

Most of the playerbase have neither the time nor the patience to spend half a day wiping to the same boss over and over again.

I don’t use any add-ons and I do just fine. Full cleared aberrus this week and only died once. Doing m+ for the first time this season just fine, too. Add-ons aren’t required by any means, ime.

Even if they removed addons, the bad players would still be bad and the good players would still be good.

You wouldn’t suddenly rise to the top.

I didn’t even have the patience for it back when I raided MC in late Vanilla. That was already a three-night affair at 3 hours a pop, but those are rookie numbers compared to true professionals…

So when you had no more than 9 hours a week raiding MC, that was already pushing it on how many wipes could happen.

I don’t actually rely on too many addons in raids. I actually usually have DBM turned off most times when raiding. But addons are really useful to have for a variety of things, not really just doing raids and such.

TRP is the best thing for role-players. It’s honestly amazing.

What is it you think weakauras do that makes the addon so egrigeous in your eyes? Because, for me, all weakauras do is compress visual information into an easier to read package, so I don’t need to look to buff bars at the top right to health bars top left, to action bars bottom middle.

Addons are tools, nothing more. Would you eschew using a tire iron in place of gnawing off the lug nuts with your teeth?
