Couch Co-op

You know what have dawned on me just now?

Since we have controller support via Console Port (not accounting the official controller support until it’s here) and we can multibox, or buy more then one wow license, plus we can have multi monitor setups…

… is it possible to do couch co-op now or in the future after the controller support? split-screen, shared-screen or Multi-screen. (ala couch co-op.) :video_game:

…?

Just set up a VM and divvy your monitor space. Bam, done.

Oh yea. i have to explain couch coop do i?

In the event if you need an explanation to know where i’m coming from, back in the old days of consoles, there is multiplayer games that you can play offline, all you really got to do is plug in another controller if it’s 2-4 player compatible. Games like Halo 1 to 4, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Left for Dead 2 and so on, has splitscreen co-op. And you have games like Super Smash Bros, Castle Crashers, Cuphead (A fairly new game) or even GTA SA sometimes on consoles and such that shares the same screen but the camera is a bit more zoomed out to see everything that is going on. I’m throwing Multi-screen as a potential option here in the event the game has split screen and has support for multi-monitor setup. So 3840x1080 (2 1920x1080 monitors put together), can be split between two players.

It is worthy of mention that offline local co-op (Like shared-screen and splitscreen) like these are still a thing, but these days are pretty rare and continue to get rare as console generations go. Going by Co-Optimus, and with the filters of Couch Co-Op and Splitscreen enabled; Ps4 has 85 games, Xbox One has 84, Nintendo Switch has 63 and The PC has 144. Going back to the previous console generations, this sort of thing is even more common.

While Co-Op over online is fun and all, it doesn’t have the same sort of fun factor as you would with playing with your friend on the same couch, sharing or splitting the screen. Especially since theirs a factor of the online connection when doing online co-op, which can be a downside. Though it’s fair to mention that the Splitscreen Co-Op does take a hit of the performance for that game on the consoles at the time. Honestly, i think Blizzard should offer this option, if they are going to make controller support, if it isn’t already a thing with the ConsolePort Addon.

Well, you can already do the divvying without using VM. Multi-Montior setup or just resizing your windows. I’m asking if it’s possible to play 2 instances of WoW with a controller for each. Port 1 goes to WoW 1, Port 2 goes to WoW 2, and so on.

My favorite part of splitscreen was the other player cheating by looking at where I was located.

Where I work, the guys don’t have internet and this is still a thing when they’re playing against each other. They have no shame in admitting they do it too.

My cousin and I used to tape pieces of cardboard either above our eyes or below our chin so that cheating was harder. If the player screens were on top of each other I mean rather than left to right

Good times.

My brothers, cousins, and I actually built a little wooden frame that we threw a sheet over–one you could not see through. Had it pressed to the screen and the bottom player just sat inside it.

Made it virtually impossible to cheat.

That’s kinda what we did we were just dumb kids.

Granted I’m basically a runt so even as a kid my cousin ( he’s only around 11 months older ) could easily lift me up and choke slam me like the undertaker if I cheated

This is a PC game. We don’t do split screen co-op. We do LAN parties!

I don’t know how well WoW tolerates really weird aspect ratios, but there’s already software that can subdivide your physical screen into multiple ones for displaying. Then you just run two copies of WoW, one on each of the subdivided screens. And you could definitely run two copies of WoW on two different monitors.

God I miss those. Many fond memories of hearing a friend curse down the hall where his tv was because I kept using rockets in halo

Lmao.

One weekend we mutually agreed that whoever cheated got hung off the door knob by their underwear…

The shortest person cheated. He was not pleased. >.>

So many fun dumb stories with him and video games.

I remember being stuck watching him play a resident evil game. I forget which one. Proooooobably nemesis. We shared a tv so I basically had to just sit there bored out of my skull til it was my turn for a game.

He got stuck on some puzzle where you needed a code but he couldn’t find it. I just freaking guessed and got it right and that freaked him out lol

What are you, a psychic? :open_mouth:

Favorite games to take turns on was always the first three Devil May Cry games or Crash Bandicoot.

We’d play until we died or beat a level, then we’d switch.

Kind of missing couch multiplayer now …

True. Crash was always good for that. I was at the age where I played more stuff like Sly Cooper , Jak and Daxter. I didn’t venture to horror games til Resident Evil 4 came out. Once again I was stuck bored watching him play yet for once I didn’t feel mega scared so I asked him if I could try it.

The only times I got scared was that one part where a guy on fire bursts out of some kinda cabinet or kitchen cupboard at the final area of the game. Granted that was more the developers being cheeky with a jump scare.

And the regenerators still make me uneasy

I know what couch co-op is, c’mon now. XD

I was just puzzled by why it seemed to be difficult. As long as the controllers are recognized as separate inputs, it should be trivial to set up as long as you can make sure each player has enough screen real estate.

Hey, you did better than I did.

You know the very first zombie you ever see in Resident Evil 1? The cutscene where it zooms in on his face and he turns around?

Yeah. That made me cry. I was like four or five but still.

Doubt it. It’s still 1 computer, so you’d only be active in one instance of the game at a time (and the cursor wouldn’t be duplicated anyway).

Multiboxing sends the keypresses to EVERY instance of WoW at the same time, but that’s very much different than 2 independent inputs doing different things out of sync.

Oh.

Apologies. :hammer:

Multi-monitor and Ultra Widescreen is doable in WoW.

Ok. I was thinking about going the opposite direction though. Like chopping a single screen in half. So, 8x9 (side by side) or 32x9 (top and bottom). 32x9 would be the same as two monitors side by side though.

Some games claim that the weird aspect ratios give you a competitive advantage and refuse to support them.

See, my brother and I just figured we’d both cheat and made it part of the skill. Who could cheat better?
