Cosmetic Bloat Devalues This Game

I think we are reaching a point where there are so many armor sets, mounts, pets, toys, and tittles that they have almost all lost their meaning and value. We are inundated with cosmetics every expansion and the rate at which Blizzard is creating them is extremely unhealthy for the game.

Take the amount of mount that 9.0 launched with : approximately 80 mounts across the game, that is an insane number to start an expansion with.

Battle for Azeroth had a total amount of about 97 mounts for the whole expansion. Shadowlands almost started close to that amount, and will surpassed it by almost 15 mounts when 9.1 comes out.

To put this into perspective, The Burning Crusade had in total of 31 mounts and Wrath of the Lich King had about 40. From which I could count with my finger which ones were prestigious.

This doesn’t even begin to account to titles, toys and pets bloat there is. It seems like almost everything has lost their meaning. Even seeing invincible or Ashes of Al’ar in Mist of Pandaria was cool, now, with so many mounts from so many sources - I mean what’s even the point?

When was the last time you got something that you felt cool about? With so many things out, I hardly get this feeling anymore, maybe it is my own mentally, who knows but I think we will reach a point players will stop caring about cosmetic rewards all together.

This would fall under the unpopular opinion category.

Disagree with you OP.

I don’t care what anyone else is using, I care about what I have on my character. Collecting stuff is fun. Having options is fun. For lots of people out there, collecting different cosmetics is their end game.

I stopped collecting mounts and pets outside of the easy ones. Collecting them was a fun activity when there were only a handful, and they were noteworthy for it.

Now we get double digit mounts and pets every patch. I just can’t be bothered to keep up anymore.

Perhaps, I’m just sharing my perspective. I have no idea, I got the Sin Touched Mount today and felt literally nothing and I tried to find why, and it doesn’t even have to do with the difficulty of obtaining it that even gives it values, it just there are soooo many mounts that it just doesn’t seem special anymore.

The same with almost every cosmetic, there are hundreds of sets out there, titles and toys and pets… just so many - nothing feels unique to me.

The one title that catches my eye is Hand of A’dal, everything else to me is meh.

There are groups of people who’s main motivation is to collect mounts, pets, titles, and mogs.

Removing them would hurt that group of players…but keeping them/adding more hurts nobody.

Well everything is gated so on downtime people want to collect cosmetics?

Eh… yeah that was my end game too which is why I made this post. There is going to be a point where your brain chemistry will stop rewarding you for collecting cosmetics because you would have done it so many times. I guess this is true for any experience in reality, you get diminish returns.

First time I got a 1% mount to drop, I scream, clapped, took a screenshot, show my friends, showed it off, showed my family which don’t even play this game. The 20th time? ā€œThank god I don’t have to come to this place anymoreā€. It just happens, I guess there is no solution since this game is about to go into it’s 17th year?

Why do so many people pretend like time-gates are a fairly new thing in WoW? lol

Magic Moose and Netherdrakes have really been the only things I’ve ever really cared about in this game.

I am that group of people!

Been thinking about this.

One thing that gives WoW a kind of monopolistic advantage over other MMO’s is it’s managed to leverage it’s entire existence into a collection side game with mounts, mogs, pets, and achievements. So while other games can temporarily gain some ground with better content they quickly lose it because it’s back to WoW, at least it has something to do with the collection game.

And while I’m not sure if it’s been the extreme content drought causing me to play the collection game too much in the last two years but I’m to the point where I think the system is starting to collapse under it’s own weight. I just don’t care about collecting these things anymore. They have become meaningless and pointless.

There’s way too much of it for completion to be realistic goal and nothing really sticks out as special enough to really put work into.

But launching with 80 mounts… It’s like they’re desperately clinging to any hamster wheel that shows signs of working and spinning it so fast they break it.

This is where I am, as somebody who loved collecting things back in other expansion. I have reached this point. The fact that they are releasing so many cosmetic at a time compare to other expansion made this feeling worst.

Is this a problem with Blizzard or just that the game has been out for too long, maybe I should stop caring about collecting things and just play the game, do PvP, AOTC, and KSM as goals and stop there. I’m just going to have to reflect on this weird feeling I never got before.

I’m with you. The explosion of mounts and cosmetics has diminished my interest in collecting.

I guess it depends why you’re collecting things

If the intent is to brag to people and show that your collection is superior then i can see that being boring?

If the intent is to just have a lot of things you enjoy and you can use a mount to match every new outfit perfectly then it shouldn’t feel like a bad thing to have more mounts available?

I personally don’t collect things unless i really want something specific. I would absolutely love the green voidtalon from the mount achievement but i’ll never go out of my way to grind for mount #

I definitely enjoy doing mount offs against people though lol

Isle of Quel’danas. You could only get so much rep per day because you could only do so many dailies per day.

That was what, 12 years ago?

Is that the new ā€˜ā€˜we should go back to the root’’ thing? Doesn’t it always fell when we try to go back at how it was before?.

Like how we tried to go back at faction war again…
Or how having just 60 was going to save the game…
Or even more recently, how gear being hard to get again was so popular?

Retail is call retail for a reason and it should continue to go on. If you don’t like, classic whatever expansion you liked might be best for you.

With the exception of mounts, I disagree… There are WAYYYY to many mounts in this game, its almost like a new mount is available bi-monthly… Its kinda ridiculous. Mounts def lose their value much faster than they should…

Everything else is fine… We actually need MORE armor sets, toys, and titles. Removing dungeon class sets was a HUGE mistake…

Current game has somewhere in the ballpark of 1500 pets.

You can complete EVERY bit of pet battling content with about 28 of those 1500 pets.

The handful of people disagreeing with the OP are missing the point. Yes, collecting things is fun. But we’re way past that. It’s absurd. We’re collecting… just to collect.

It’s not a fun hobby, it’s a disorder. lol

The worst part of all of this is how much these things are hidden behind FRACTIONAL percentage drops now.

Collecting things is fun. Mindless treadmills are not. Blizzard is quite a few miles down the RNG-as-content road that was the very premise of what they were AGAINST at the start of WoW.

It was taken to the extreme. To the point where dungeons spoiled campaigns that were still timegated.
