Corruptions for frost mage no IL build

Hi All,

Question for frost mages. I’m playing a no-IL build and have ~45% Mastery right now. Based on Bloodmallet I have been prioritizing Masterful corruptions but I’ve been looking at sims with raidbots and it seems that Honed Mind is giving me more dps per corruption point than Masterful. This is true on Patchwerk, Hectic Add Cleave, and Dungeon slice fights. I have also told raidbots to use the no ice lance build so I think the sims are accurate.

Has anyone else seen this in their sims and decided to go with Honed Mind corruptions instead? One issue with that is that the dps would then be pretty bursty depending on when Honed Mind procs.

Did you add this under custom?

rotation=no_ice_lance

You did something wrong in raidbots. I have simmed honed 3 against masterful 3 on the exact same piece of gear, and masterful 3 wins

Velgen: Thanks, I did add the no ice lance rotation in the custom apl.

Ayrenn: Perhaps but I’m using the default settings plus the no ice lance rotation so I’m not sure what I could have done wrong. When I try Masterful 3 (20 corruption) versus Honed Mind 2 (20 corruption) on the same piece I get a dps increase of 2681 and 3085 respectively. So the Honed is adding about 400 dps more. I’m not sure if it could be due to my haste which is currently quite high by accident?

A glimpse of your profile shows you don’t have many gem sockets, so honestly I’m not surprised a proc is pulling ahead of a static % increase.

That’s how corruptions work. When your secondaries are low, the procs are always stronger and you might find something obscure and totally not recommended (even something like Void Ritual) produce better results than just a flat % increase. However, as your secondaries increase then the flat % wins.

Condensed Life Force as a major might also be a factor as it doesn’t interact with Frost’s Mastery (nearly all NoIL builds run MoLD).

Thanks, that makes sense. I will buy as much masterful 3 as I can and then wait to put them in until I have better gear.

I’ve been using Condensed Life Force as the major over MoLD since it sims higher for me right now. I guess once I have more mastery that will change.

is ur mastery on ur base gear high?
edit: looking at ur stats u only have a few pieces with mastery on it thats def the problem

I have more pieces with mastery which are lower ilvl but I switched to these based on sims. I haven’t gotten very lucky with the weekly cache since many of those pieces came without mastery.

Something else to consider… do you want to deal with more RNG? or less RNG?

Honed may sim better, but then you’re at the behest of not only flurry procs, but also honed procs. Masterful on the other hand is just a consistent bonus.

I personally have had a bit of a enough of praying to RNGeebus and as such just went full masterful (I’m also MS fire, so it was nice to multi-spec).

Also, Memory as a major can be fun, but… it’s the same question… do you want to deal with RNG? Or consistency? CLF puts out more than decent numbers, it just doesn’t have the crazy high’s of Memory.

Good point. I would honestly lean for res RNG. It is fun when the big hits come (like 900k glacial spike) but I think I’ll be leaning for Masterful. Plus, as others have pointed out, I think honed is only siming higher since I don’t have enough base mastery yet. Once I fix that Masterful should be the best corruption.

Hi All,

Tlupi’s alt here. I’ve got a lot more base mastery now and I still have the same issue. Honed mind still sims better than masterful at equal corruption levels. I’ve also tested this by using the droptimizer tool on other mages like Ayrenn who posted here and I also find that they sim higher with honed mind on patchwerk fights. I’m debating get rid of my last honed mind for a masterful (so less rng) but I was wondering if anyone else had seen this in their sims?

I’ve for some reason found mine sims best with Masterful but 2 x Clockwork heart essences as well + 1 x Tradewinds essence.

Thanks for the response. Would you mind sharing your mage so I can play with the sims a bit?
