Hi’all new player here trying to experience the older content
I am starting my second character after my completion of the first lv 50 (BfA)
Now I must choose which expansion to start with, now I was thinking to go as:
TBC -> WoTLK -> Cata -> MoP -> WoD -> Legion -> Bfa (Again cuz I only want to finish it with my future main character) -> SL
Now here comes the problem, I read that CATACYLSM messes up the timeline a bit, as seen in Chromie Time, she puts Cata before TBC and WoTLK.
I understand that some OG content are no longer available as they been removed by Blizzard during Cata but if I want to learn the story chronologically, what is the ideal sequence to approach the expansions?
Well, first off, you’ll hit 50 long before you finish any given expansion, and Chromie Time will spit you back out into Ogrimmar/Stormwind.
You can go back, but the zones won’t be leveled to you (they’ll stop at their current max level).
Chromie’s order really doesn’t matter. There isn’t any way to do any of the content without experiencing inconsistencies (suddenly Varian/Vol’jin/Garrosh are alive and leading).
Your expansion order is broadly the correct one.
Personally I don’t recommend it, as design philosophies have changed a lot over the years. MoP onwards groups the quests better and provides better flow through the zones, and largely isn’t ‘fetch 8 bear flanks’ with terrible drop rates, and quest givers scattered all over the map. The further back you go, the more of that you get.
Thanks for the advice, I intend to play a new character for every expansion and turn off exp at lv49 before I can finish all the major content of that expansion
Cata changed all of the vanilla zones, but Cata still had it’s own zones, dungeons, and raids for it’s own time after wrath. Do vanilla -> TBC -> WoTLK -> Cata -> MoP -> WoD -> Legion -> Bfa still.
hmm okay I will do it that way, also I read it somewhere says if you choose Cata to level, because of the way Cata is made, lv1-30 quests are vanilla quests so you can’t go to any Cata new zones until lv30.
Maybe I should do quests in vanilla through lv30 without Chromie then hop back to TBC and finish it?
Also there is a npc that can lock your exp so you can do all this questing at 49 and make some decent gold and not have most stuff just fall over super easy.
If I were you I would make a character for each of the expansions and level them exclusively in their chosen one.
As was said earlier you will cap out in just about all of them before you finish. If you want to keep the scaling of the mobs and quests to your current level you can lock your xp when you hit 49.
Cata is a bit confusing because it was really just the addition of several new zones to Azeroth and the butchering of several others. It is by far my least favorite but Uldum and the Twilight Highlands were pretty sweet. On the plus side you can just chose to level in vanilla zones, which to date have some of the best storylines.
