people i played Scrabble with, used unofficial “words” or else it becomes 100-tile pick up
That’s the beauty of language. It’s always evolving. Words are constantly being added to the dictionary.
If you were to travel back in time there would be increased difficulty in communication the further back you go even though your still speaking the same language.
Exactly this. Some one says ‘copium’ in the context about a thing people are passionate about, people understood what is meant, as ‘They are in denial about a decline in quality of the thing they like’.
The point of language is to effectively convey thoughts/intents/etc, and by using the one word of ‘copium’ they replace an entire sentence of meaning in a way that is clear to the intended conversers of a subject mater, ergo, they have successfully use language as they have conveyed thoughts/meanings/intent.
TL:DR; Language is complicated, as long as you understand the point/intent being conveyed, then they’ve succeeded in the goal of language.
Agreed that language evolves, sometimes rapidly, and that for a language like English this is fundamental. Much of the distaste for “copium” comes from the fact that it’s part of the trend of derogatory neologisms arising largely if not entirely from the malignant American sociopolitical environment.
Are copium dens a thing?
I think it’s more that it’s used in a typically negative manner such as ‘lay of the copium’ meaning more of a ‘You need to reassess the situation as you are putting forth a notable amount of hope and are in denial about the truth of what’s going on with the situation’ if that makes sense, or at least, that’s how I personally interpret such uses of it.
At least 8 words in that sentence are fake.
Thats typically called the shaman class discord.
“Literally” was literally used “wrong” so frequently when people meant “figuratively” that its official definition literally changed to include the figurative sense.
Don’t underestimate the power of people “misusing” words.
The funny thing is you actually know what it means… What a ridiculous thing to complain about.
It’s just the new gamer lingo. We’ve all gone through it.
Congratulations. You’ve discovered how languages and dialects are formed over time.
I was raised by waspy middle class Irish folks, and we would never use that word. But, it is a word.

Words are made and brought into language all the time. That’s how languages change over time.
