Coping with loss of Characters

Edited to simplify the point.

Characters should have never been forced to move on past Classic.

The current remix is a good thing.
The stuff in the bags could be gone.
As I stated before the flying is my thing.
Gone past the loss of everything…so.
Good luck…

They weren’t lost, they just progressed like Retail did in the past to a more advanced expansion.

That said for cloning there was really a lot of time to use either the free or paid feature. Surely you must’ve had some time prior your 18 months overseas?

Reality is its a mmorpg the game is constantly changing and updating on a regular bases all your toons aee now on cata classic there no way to go back unless you play season of discovery and even thwn you would have to reroll.

Then this game isn’t for you. Sorry for your loss though.

My advice? Don’t play it.

You didn’t lose them Blizzard offered the Classic brand and then notified the playerbase that Classic itself would be move on as a service with a museum peace that is Era being created on the side. TBC was planned all along with Era as a sidepiece as an extra compromise. Your characters from Classic are still on Classic, just progressing through the expansions. Just like your very first WoW character from Vanilla has progressed across the expansions over the years. Era is it’s own product. Now is a great time to join in on leveling a new character.

This couldn’t have been posted in the 50 other dusty and whiney threads that already exist, amirite?

Honestly probably just a sock puppet from one of those threads.

I looked into this a while back. The only notifications present were on the bnet launcher so you would only get them if you were actively playing the game, or keeping up with WoW news. By contrast, when the cloning service was first announced, an email was sent out to account holders informing them. When the cloning service was shutting down, no such email was sent.

So if the OP was not actively playing WoW during this time, it’s not reasonable to expect that they would have gotten notification. This is an area where Blizzard absolutely dropped the ball and a lot of people are coming back, expecting to play their Era characters, then wondering where they went.

While Blizzard handled this extremely poorly, there’s nothing to be said about it. Whether or not you believe them when they say the data is lost, it’s been a few years now and they aren’t offering any paths forward. The only options for the OP are as follows…

  • Play your characters on Cata, which is where they now reside.
  • Accept the loss and reroll on Era. There are communities to be found, let me know if you need suggestions.
  • Unsubscribe and walk away from WoW in protest. Ensure that you let them know the reasons for your choice in the unsubscribe form.

Sorry, OP, and good luck!

Blizzard literally announced TBC was coming and they would be offering a clone service. It was more than just a “battle.net launcher” add. It was all over the forums, in your email, etc. They made a rather big deal of presenting it and the clone service. They also made it very clear that Classic as a whole was moving on and progressing while Era was being created as a museum piece and gave you the choice to clone, stay, or move on. Did they tell you in big bold letters they were ending it? No. Did they tell you it was around forever? Also no. It’s on you.

I feel your pain. For me it’s “only” my main, as I never imagined Cata or no Era servers for TBC/Wrath.
If I was you I’d “re-create” those characters in a HC server. Not dying puts spice to the replay, and if (when) they die there’s free transfer to Era, where you then have at least a headstart and new, differnt memories for your characters.

Judges?

Ok, they’re going to allow this descriptive term, but as a very loose interpretation.

ROFL. I swear I saw this EXACT post like a year ago during Wrath. Almost word for word.

And Blizz said “Deal with it.”

I think you misread.

You were properly notified that the cloning service was being launched, you weren’t properly notified that it was being shut down.

This is the first, and only, time in WoW’s 20 year history that character data has been deliberately destroyed (outside of TOS violations).

If you love the version like you say you would have no issue redoing what you lost. I know I wouldn’t.

I just dont like wasting my time on a realm that is either dead or hyped on GDKP juice.

There should be a GDKP server. It will contain the problem and we all get to take bets on when NFT’s start becoming currency for loot.

I’m sorry but the one lacking any real comprehension is yourself.

Blizzard deleted CLONE backup data. Your character is just fine on Cata and you can log in and see it. Because it isn’t on your “preferred” version doesn’t mean they destroyed the data. Era was created and you had an option to clone to it if you didn’t choose specifically to move there as Classic itself was moving forward. The very post explaining what a clone was outlined that for you. CLONES WERE FOR ERA PURPOSES, NOT YOUR ORIGINAL. Classic was planned to progress whether you liked it or not. Your original character was not destroyed, an optional clone was because you dicked around and wasted time as Era was created as a compromise to preserve WoW’s history. Classic was planned to move forward with your character. Era was an afterthought.

There were a few out there during TBC happily accepting crypto and I sat through most of a bitcoin negotiation during a pug. I have no doubt at least one mongo was taking nfts.

Sorry Charles for your loss.
BG3 is pretty great if you’re looking for another game. gl

Yeah. But if Blizzard just bans all the bots GDKP totally wouldn’t have any of these problems dude.
