Controller support

With the wave of UI updates and improvements coming in DF, I once again ask if Blizzard could please implement real controller support for the game.

There already is a rudimentary, very rough controller mode in the game that can be turned on using console commands, and back in Oct 2020 a player named Duff wrote a very good guide to how to turn it on. I’m not sure if I can link to it here though. I’ve tried it myself and it feels workable, but it still needs a lot of improvements. But it’s at the point that with just a bit more effort Blizzard could have a real, honest to goodness gamepad mode in the game.

Over the years I’ve had to stop playing mouse and keyboard games because my wrist started hurting, and it’s one of the reasons why I stopped playing during Shadowlands. I would be really happy if I could come back to WoW and have a real controller mode available.

Is there’s anyone else who finally wants to play WoW with a controller without having to resort to mods and outside programs?

I totally agree with better Controller support. While we are on the controller support topic I implore Blizzard to give controller support to the World of Warcraft that is coming to Mobile devices.

Genshin Impact only has controller support for IOS and PC, so Blizzard please add controller support for all your games on any device!

Thanks.

Ion already stated that WoW will remain a pc-only game and is designed from the ground up for PC only.

How would you even heal with a controller anyway? Seems clunky

That has nothing to do with controller support.
Lots of PC games have it. It is sometimes used to overcome accessibility issues or just general preference or whatever.
Controllers have so many buttons it’s very easy to get a workable setup going using bumpers in place of shift or alt.

I support it being added, but wouldn’t be using it personally.

Right now I use the controller addon ConsolePort + ElvUI (and the other main addons) when I feel like using my Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and I have over 60 keybind combinations to use. The back paddles on the controller is bound to targeting, jump, and my mount using the reWASD program. I have very small diminishing returns when grinding dungeons over when I use M+KB. It’s nice to kick back in a reclining chair using a controller when I want to chill and play while listening to music on my 4k TV. Full implementation by Blizzard would be easy to do if they wanted to.

I play FF with a controller.

Right trigger + left bumper to tab target. Hold down a trigger to use buttons on abilities rather than things like jumping or opening the map. Double tap triggers for more hotbars. Left then right trigger(hold both) and right then left(again hold both) for another bar. Right bumper cycles through bars too.

I have 8 x 8 button hotbars. That’s more than plenty for wow. FF has more buttons than wow does for some classes now. I see no reason they couldn’t do it.

They just don’t want to.

Agreed. The basics are actually getting better, and with just a little work they could be great.
BUT - I recognize that there are a lot of irregular activities in WOW that would also require work to function on a gamepad, like the mini-games of manning a turret or climbing a wall to rescue a kitten. To announce “official” support, Blizzard would have to make sure everything in WOW is playable with a gamepad, and they’re not there, yet.

I use a controller as well, but ground targeted stuff is a nightmare for me.

I play with a controller using Console Port. Its not perfect but it allows me to play WoW without the mouse and keyboard.

Hey Arth, can you bind the back paddles in Consolport? Or do I need reWASD?

Just use any free remapper, it doesn’t have to be reWASD.

Ugh. I couldn’t imagine healing or tanking using a controller. So slow.
