Since control undead is a useless ability as Unholy because it removes your class pet that has higher dps…
Control Undead as Unholy should work as a tame pet like hunters have. We currently have two options of ghouls to use, both of which are pretty bland. If we had the ability to choose our pet model like hunters do, it would add so much flavor to Unholy.

I wouldn’t mind a spell to fill out a necromancy grimoire to help us learn other Undead types to summon, in terms of the graphics. But I don’t think they need to give us alternative Undead types to summon in terms of the battle statistics they use. We don’t need a different actual pet types, just leave it as the ghoul statistics no matter what and let us summon a graphical equivalent “ghoul” for any Undead we can find in the wild and manage to decipher how to create it.
But Control Undead is bonkers in a bad way for Unholy. We’re the masters of Undead of all the DK types, and yet that spell is generally actively harmful to us compared to Frost or Blood that just get straight benefit from it.
There is no reason that spell should be replacing our ghoul. What it should do is control an Undead like the skeletal minion from All Will Serve, and if you have All Will Serve collect it as a 2nd undead “skeletal minion”.

i like the idea of using control undead to replace our current pet model, but i also like the idea of having a drop menu like warlock to pick from a few of our pets with different abilites/strengths. so then i was thinking, why not both? let you use control undead to replace all your undead pet models, that undead t-rex that pats outside of uldir would make an awesome pet.
But control undead isn’t useless…in m+ in dungeons like under rot, atal dazar, etc, it’s a great hard cc, effectively removing a trash mob from the fight.

it’s only great as a hard CC if you are not unholy, unholy has to dismiss their pet to use the spell, taking a significant dps loss
The loss of Unholy Transformation is is pretty big. Would be nice to see it work on a controlled undead, maybe just give it a damage increase. Only time I really use it is to CC on big pulls and the Honor Guards on Atal.
This is frustrating. It seems like they hadn’t considered Unholy having a pet when designing this ability, but once it was made prob too much work to remake a new ability just for unholy so they were like screw it. Unholy gets the shaft
it has to do with pet mechanics, you can’t have a pet when you already have a pet, hence the all will serve skeleton is a guardian.
unholy also has this issue with mind control in pvp, you have to dismiss your pet before you can mind control that priest to walk off a cliff.
That’s my point. In order to give us an equivocal ability they have to change “control undead” completely because it adds the undead as a pet. I’m saying the issue here feels super obvious. SO the only logical conclusion we can come to is they shrugged their shoulders and said @#@! it.
or they looked and the code for mind control and controlling other creatures is buried deep and can’t easily be changed without breaking a lot of things. look how many bugs just adding 4 bag slots caused.
“99 bugs in the code i compiled, 99 bugs in the code, take one down, patch it around, 127 bugs in the code…”
