Those of us from the last vestiges of Gen-X, who grew up playing our Ataris, Nintendos, Segas, and Play Stations, beat back an overwhelming social ostracization for our passion. Video games were too violent, over-sexualized, brain rotting, for our Puritan culture. There were even congressional hearings about it for games like Mortal Kombat. In the end, video games became mainstream; accepted forms of entertainment.
I’d imagine many people who play games, and even develop them, were born after all of this happened. But the people who lived through it still exist and play today.
The purpose of this post is only for reconciliation. Those of us 40+ are watching this “cleansing” of video games, often cheerleaded by certain corporate media outlets, with a certain form of resentment. The 80s, and especially the 90s, were about challenging authority, pushing the limits, and bucking established dogma.
Today, it seems that video games these days are just, to use a GoT reference, bending the knee. That’s my thought anyway. If anyone wonders why some of us push back against these changes, maybe this’ll add some context.

Yeah I thought this is why game ratings were added in the least. It has content that may not be suitable for certain types of people, or perhaps be upsetting.
These days though it’s like walking on glass with people.

Right?
Pretty much. I feel like games became some weird political statement or something.

I am solidly Gen X.
I can remember core gamer culture being viciously callous, sexist, and homophobic. If that is finally changing, to the point where content catering to the assumption that those values are core to the demographic has to be removed, I say it’s about damn time.
Don’t make this an age thing. Because it isn’t.

I wonder if they’ll remove Brewfest from the game and all alcohol items. Drinking can lead to bad touching and violence.

I am with you, and I like SL. Myself and a few friends are in the same boat. We are being told our 20s were offensive and it’s sad.
The spit thing, could care less, but the double entendre stuff getting the ax, I am wondering how much more they will push out? It’s sad that things that have made me laugh for over a decade, are being removed because a very vocal minority seems to keep getting heard, not the players who have been here for almost decades at this point.

They added Monks, a whole class that drinks as a part of their rotations.
The removal of NPC names is good, for sure.
I’m more talking about the political correctness, though. It feels like that rebellious nature of gamers is now just conformity.

What I don’t get is how we have violence and very mature moral themes and that is OK, but /spit or some cleavage or a bad word gets removed as if people are actually offended over them verses mass murder.

Yeah I wish they’d get this upset over North Korea

Funny how “taste makers” in American entertainment industry have correlated with decline of the industry as a whole. Imported entertainment, such as manga, anime, manhwa, etc… are seeing double digit growth. While Hollywood, American entertainment industry sees double digit decline YoY.

I am. I just won’t talk about politics on the WoW forums, unless somebody else starts it. Then, I can’t help but get involved.

I mean it was an example definitely not trying to derail anything in this thread. Politics is a bit heated for sure.
I am 50 a solid old school genxer and as I have said before leave the stuff in, I have a healthy suspicion of ALL authority regardless of who the authority is ( unlike a lot of the fake outrage people) I just wish people would be CONSISTANT on their attitudes of " Live and let Live" because a whole bunch of these people are gung ho let us have what we enjoy as long as it is things THEY enjoy when it steps out of their comfort zone they are all for suppression and oppression.

Can I get some context as to what exactly is being changed? I’m having a hard time keeping up with what is actually being looked at and what is just hyperbole.
Is this just about /spit and the Trollbane/Garrosh line edits?
Exactly but I’m NOT against people trying if they want.
I’ve just decided to sip on my mead and watch the world…

Ooo that was too edgy even for me lol
